How long can you keep an opened bottle?

Look for an expiration date or a Period After Opening symbol: an open jar with a number followed by M. The number means months after opening, not months after purchase. An open jar symbol carries useful packaging information, despite looking like a tiny illustration commissioned for a dollhouse. Write the opening date on the bottle so you can follow that period without relying on memory.13

Ordinary moisturizers do not have to carry an expiration date under US law. Shelf life depends on the formula, storage and use, so a missing date does not mean the lotion lasts indefinitely. For a CeraVe bottle without clear shelf life instructions, contact CeraVe through its contact form or US customer care number, 888 768 2915, to ask about that product.45

How should you store CeraVe lotion?

  • Wash your hands before using the lotion and keep the container clean.
  • Close the container tightly when it is not in use.
  • Protect the bottle from temperature extremes, especially a hot car.
  • Keep the lotion away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture.

Heat can break down preservatives and help bacteria and fungi grow faster. Moisture can also encourage their growth, while sunlight, air and temperature changes can alter a cosmetic's color, texture or smell. Even an unopened bottle needs suitable storage; an intact lid does not protect the contents from heat.4

When should you throw the lotion away?

Throw away the lotion if its color or smell changes. Separation or a changed texture can also indicate that a cosmetic has deteriorated. Do not keep using a changed product simply because the printed date has not passed. If using the lotion causes a rash, redness, a burn or another unexpected reaction, stop using it and contact your healthcare provider about how to care for the reaction.14

Does 48 hour hydration mean applying it every other day?

CeraVe tells you to apply Daily Moisturizing Lotion liberally as often as needed, or as directed by a physician. You can use it on your face and body at any time of day. Its routine order places moisturizer after cleansing and treatments, before sun protection. The hydration claim is not an instruction to wait 48 hours before reapplying.2

How quickly you empty the bottle depends on how much you apply and how often you use it. Face and body use give the same lotion different workloads, despite sharing one job title. There is no fixed bottle lifespan to use instead of checking your own usage.2

What if your CeraVe lotion contains SPF?

A moisturizer with SPF follows sunscreen rules, not just ordinary cosmetic shelf life guidance. Replace it when it expires because the ingredients that protect your skin break down. If there is no expiration date, mark the purchase date and replace it after three years. Replace it sooner if its color, smell or consistency changes, or it separates.34
