Which timeline applies to you?

What you startedWhat to expect
A facialBreakouts described as purging should subside within one to two weeks.
Acne treatment generallyMost treatments take at least four to six weeks to make a noticeable difference; fewer breakouts can take at least six to eight weeks.
AdapaleneMost people need at least a couple of months for acne to improve. Common irritation symptoms tend to improve after two to four weeks.

These are different clocks. The two to four week adapalene window refers to burning, redness and dryness settling, not a proven duration for extra pimples. Likewise, six to eight weeks is a treatment response window, not a reason to ignore worsening symptoms until a calendar gives you permission.45

Is it purging or irritation?

Retinoids are vitamin A related treatments that affect skin cell turnover and help clear clogged pores. They can initially appear to aggravate acne. But redness, peeling, dryness and burning are also treatment side effects, so worsening skin is not automatically purging. Irritation and contact dermatitis, an inflamed skin reaction, need a different response from simply waiting for acne treatment to work.246

Exfoliating acids also remove dead skin cells, and salicylic acid helps unclog pores. Those actions do not give every new breakout a predictable purging timetable. Too much exfoliation can irritate skin and remove structures that help retain water and healthy fats. Treat irritation as irritation rather than evidence that a product is working harder.7

What should you do while you wait?

A routine can stay short and consistent, even if the bathroom shelf has other ambitions. The aim is to give treatment time without adding avoidable irritation.7

  • Use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer. Avoid picking or squeezing spots, which increases the risk of scarring and infection.
  • Start an ordinary retinol product with a low strength on alternate nights, then build up gradually. Use retinoids at night.
  • For prescribed acne treatment, follow your clinician's directions. Ask before changing the amount, frequency or moisturizer order.
  • With adapalene, avoid other retinoids, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, abrasive cleansers and strongly drying products unless your treatment plan specifically directs otherwise.
  • Protect your skin during the day. Use broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher; adapalene guidance calls for SPF 50, plus protective clothing.

When should you stop or get help?

If adapalene makes your skin very irritated, reduce use or pause it temporarily. Stop and consult your doctor if irritation is severe or does not improve. Irritation deserves particular attention in darker skin because it can trigger dark marks. Do not use retinoids during pregnancy; stop adapalene if you think you could be pregnant.56

Arrange a medical review if acne is severe, widespread, scarring or not clearing with topical treatment. A dermatologist can also check whether apparent breakouts are acne at all. Conditions such as folliculitis and perioral dermatitis can look similar but need different treatment.34

What if the breakouts started after a facial?

A facial can include cleansing, exfoliation and moisturizer, so "I had a facial" is a summary, not an ingredient list. Ask which treatments and products were used, and follow the aftercare tailored to them. Avoid scheduling your first facial immediately before an important photo event, since temporary breakouts can follow treatment. If the reaction persists or becomes severe, have it assessed rather than booking more exfoliation to fix it.1
