That amount is general sunscreen guidance applied to a moisturizer with SPF. The product directions below cover the Canadian SPF 30 and SPF 50 lotions; check your own bottle if you bought CeraVe AM elsewhere.345
Is a small amount enough?
Use enough for sun protection, not just enough to make your skin feel moisturized. Applying less than the recommended sunscreen amount greatly reduces protection. The SPF printed on the bottle depends on using the recommended amount, so a thin application is not a way to get the same protection with less lotion.2
CeraVe AM combines moisturizing and sun protection in one lotion, so your bathroom shelf gets one fewer job title.3
For a quick visual guide, at least one teaspoon is approximately the amount needed to cover the length of your index and middle fingers. Rub the sunscreen thoroughly into your skin. Remember exposed ears, the back of your neck and the hairline rather than stopping at the centre of your face.15
How do I apply it in my morning routine?
- 1Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and gently pat dry.
- 2Apply any skin medication or treatment after cleansing. If you use a morning serum, let it absorb before applying CeraVe AM.
- 3Apply CeraVe AM generously and evenly as your final skincare step. Cover your face and neck while avoiding your eyes and mouth.
- 4Apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before going outdoors. For the Canadian SPF 50 lotion, CeraVe explicitly gives this timing.
- 5Let CeraVe AM absorb fully before applying makeup.
Does SPF 30 or SPF 50 change the amount?
Use a generous application with either version. A higher SPF is not a reason to apply less sunscreen. CeraVe's Canadian SPF 50 directions say to apply liberally over the entire face and neck. The Canadian SPF 30 directions say to apply as needed and list use for adults and adolescents over 12 years.234
The Canadian SPF 30 lotion has a richer texture than some other options, so AM is a time of day, not a texture description. That texture generally suits normal to dry skin; very oily skin can prefer a lighter lotion.3
How often should I reapply?
Reapply sunscreen at least every two hours during outdoor exposure, and immediately after swimming or sweating. Reapply after towelling off, too. CeraVe gives the two hour instruction for its Canadian SPF 50 lotion. Its all day hydration claim does not mean one morning application supplies all day sun protection.124
For swimming or sweating, CeraVe tells you to use a water resistant sunscreen. Water resistant does not mean waterproof: sunscreen still washes off and needs reapplication. Use protective clothing and limit sun exposure alongside sunscreen, rather than treating SPF as permission to stay outside longer.245
What if my skin reacts?
Before using a new sunscreen, test a small area on your inner forearm and check for a reaction after 48 hours, especially if your skin is sensitive. If a rash, itching or another reaction develops, stop using that sunscreen and try a different type or brand. Speak to a health care provider about a concerning reaction or known ingredient allergy.2
Check the expiry date before using the lotion. Keep the bottle out of direct sunlight and hot cars, because extreme heat can reduce sunscreen effectiveness.2
