How often should you use a CeraVe cleanser?

For a gentle facial cleanser, morning and evening washing is the usual schedule. Wash as soon as possible after heavy sweating, too. Extra washes throughout the day are not the answer to oiliness: washing too often can remove protective oils and leave skin tight, dry, itchy or flaky. The right frequency also depends on your skin type and existing skin conditions.14

Do not routinely skip the evening cleanse, especially when you have worn makeup. Dirt and oil can build up when cleansing is skipped. Water alone cannot properly remove everything that collects on your face, because much of that material does not dissolve in water, despite water's excellent availability.45

How to wash and moisturize

  1. 1Wet your face with lukewarm water rather than hot water.
  2. 2Apply a gentle cleanser with your fingertips. Do not scrub or use an abrasive sponge or washcloth.
  3. 3Rinse with lukewarm water, then gently pat with a soft towel rather than rubbing.
  4. 4Apply moisturizer while your clean skin is still slightly damp to help trap water in the skin.

How often should you apply CeraVe Moisturizing Cream?

CeraVe tells you to apply Moisturizing Cream liberally as often as needed, on your face and body, at any time of day. You can apply it after your morning and evening cleanse and again when dry areas need moisture. The same cream can moisturize your face and body, so the bathroom does not need separate departments.2

CeraVe Moisturizing Cream is intended especially for normal to dry skin. Its rich texture absorbs quickly, and continued use helps restore and maintain the skin's protective barrier, the outer layer that keeps moisture in and irritants out. Applying moisturizer immediately after a shower also helps prevent water loss. There is no fixed number of daily applications to work up to: the cream's directions allow additional applications as needed.23

Should dry or oily skin change the routine?

For dry skin, choose a gentle cleanser that focuses on preserving moisture. For sensitive skin, choose a fragrance free formula and avoid rough exfoliating particles. If twice daily washing with a gentle cleanser still leaves your face stripped or dry, ask a dermatologist to assess the cause rather than adding more washes.4

Moisturizer frequency and texture should reflect where you are dry. Creams preserve more moisture than lighter lotions. For combination skin, moisturize dry areas rather than automatically covering oily areas with the same amount. Oily skin can suit a lighter gel instead of a rich cream. Adjust your moisturizing routine when seasonal dryness changes what your skin needs.3

When should you stop or get help?

Stop using a cleanser that causes burning, stinging or irritation and seek advice from a dermatologist. Get help if dryness persists despite moisturizing, or becomes painful, cracked, bleeding or very irritating. If you have acne, gentle cleansing twice daily is still appropriate, but more washing is not a substitute for treatment. See a GP if spots are deep, painful, causing scars or not improving with treatment.345
