When should you increase the frequency?

Increase gradually as your skin tolerates treatment, rather than automatically adding nights each week. Dryness, peeling and redness are reasons to discuss the schedule, not reasons to force nightly use. Your dermatologist can recommend less frequent applications, a smaller amount or moisturizer before tretinoin. Make those changes with their help. There is no fixed number of weeks that everyone needs before moving from alternate nights to every night.23

How often should you use tretinoin 0.025%?

The same general approach applies to tretinoin 0.025%: follow your prescription and discuss a slower start if irritation is a concern. The percentage alone does not set your schedule, which is a lot of managerial responsibility to give a decimal point. Sun Pharmaceutical's 0.025% cream is an acne treatment, and its label allows a clinician to direct less frequent use or a temporary pause when irritation warrants it.14

How to apply tretinoin on treatment nights

  1. 1Wash your hands and the treatment area with a mild cleanser. Let your skin dry as directed.
  2. 2If your dermatologist has recommended moisturizer first to reduce irritation, apply it before tretinoin.
  3. 3Use clean fingertips to spread enough tretinoin to cover the affected area in a thin layer.
  4. 4Keep tretinoin away from your eyes, mouth and the corners of your nose. Do not apply it to sunburned skin or areas affected by eczema.

A tretinoin routine can stay with gentle cleansing, moisturizer and the prescribed medication. Do not add benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid or other topical medications unless your doctor directs you. Each morning, use sunscreen with broad spectrum protection, SPF 30 or higher and water resistance; also seek shade and wear protective clothing.123

How long should you give the schedule?

For acne treatment generally, expect at least 6 to 8 weeks before seeing fewer breakouts; treatments can take up to 3 months to work. Tretinoin can initially worsen acne during the first 7 to 10 days. Fine wrinkle improvement takes longer, often 3 to 4 months and sometimes up to 6 months. Do not increase beyond your prescribed frequency because results are slow. Once acne is controlled, your dermatologist can recommend continued retinoid treatment to help keep it clear, rather than stopping automatically.135

What if you miss an application?

Apply the missed dose when you remember, unless it is almost time for the next one. In that case, skip it and resume your regular schedule. Never apply extra tretinoin to make up for a missed dose.1

When should you pause or contact your doctor?

Stop using tretinoin if a reaction suggests sensitivity or significant irritation, and contact your prescriber about restarting. Report severe or persistent burning, peeling, swelling or blistering. Call your doctor immediately for rash, hives or pain at the treatment area. Discuss existing dryness, skin allergies or substantial redness before starting. On darker skin, irritation can trigger dark marks, making a slow start and moisturizer particularly useful. Do not use retinoids during pregnancy. Tell your prescriber if you are planning pregnancy or breastfeeding, and call them if you become pregnant during treatment.146
