This advice is for plain petroleum jelly; Vaseline Pure contains 100% white petrolatum, while other products bearing the Vaseline name need their own label directions. Petroleum jelly helps relieve chapped skin and lips and protects against the drying effects of wind and cold.3
When should you reapply?
Apply after a bath or shower, after washing your hands, and whenever dryness returns. Gently pat your skin rather than rubbing it dry, then apply while the skin is still damp. Cold weather can increase how often you need a moisturiser. The layer traps moisture in your skin, which is a more useful job than looking impressive on a bathroom shelf.245
If petroleum jelly feels too greasy for daytime use, use a cream during the day and an ointment at night. Ointments are greasy, so a shiny finish is part of the texture rather than a skincare achievement. Moisturising treatments are left on the skin rather than washed off.12
How to apply Vaseline
- 1Wash your hands before applying.
- 2For a tub, use a clean spoon or spatula to take out the amount you need instead of dipping your fingers inside.
- 3Smooth a thin layer gently over the dry area in the direction your hair grows. Do not rub it vigorously into the skin.
- 4Leave the layer on and reapply as needed.
How often should you put Vaseline on your face?
For dry facial areas, use petroleum jelly as needed on damp skin. For dry, flaky eyelids, apply a small amount for moisture and protection, keeping it out of your eyes. Avoid petroleum jelly on your face if you are prone to acne, because it can cause breakouts in some people. A facial rash or new breakouts are reasons to reconsider using it, not to add more.135
Does the frequency change for other uses?
- For dry lips, apply petroleum jelly when they need moisture.
- For minor cuts and scrapes, clean the wound daily and apply as needed to keep it moist. Preventing a dry scab helps healing.
- For chafing prevention, apply to areas that rub against skin or clothing, such as feet or thighs.
- For diaper rash, apply at every diaper change. The rash should clear in about three to four days with appropriate care; seek medical advice if it does not.
When should you stop or get help?
Stop using a moisturising treatment that makes your skin itchy or sore. Discuss burning, stinging or irritation with a dermatologist. The Vaseline Pure label advises seeing a doctor if the condition lasts more than seven days and says not to use it on deep or puncture wounds, animal bites or serious burns.234
If you use a prescribed steroid cream, leave at least 30 minutes between the steroid and your moisturising treatment, and ask your doctor which to apply first. Keep away from flames and cigarettes: clothing, bedding and dressings containing moisturiser residue can catch fire easily, even after washing.12
How often should you replace Vaseline?
There is no single replacement interval to apply to every Vaseline container. Follow any expiry date on your packaging; for a container without one, ask the manufacturer about its shelf life. Product longevity depends on storage and handling. Keep the container and utensils clean, avoid storing it in heat, and use a clean utensil each time. Changes in smell, colour or texture can signal deterioration.16
