Can I use niacinamide every day?
Yes. Daily use fits a regular skincare routine, and niacinamide is generally gentle. Check the products you already use before adding a serum: niacinamide also appears in cleansers, moisturizers and sunscreens. A separate serum is optional if your moisturizer already contains niacinamide, despite the bathroom shelf's apparent ambition to become a shop.1
How often can beginners use niacinamide serum?
- 1Test a small amount on your forearm and wait 24 hours before using it more widely.
- 2Choose a low concentration, especially for sensitive skin. Most skincare products contain 5% niacinamide or less.
- 3Start with one daily application after gentle cleansing rather than beginning with two. You can apply niacinamide after moisturizer or combine the serum with moisturizer.
- 4If twice daily use causes excessive dryness, reduce to once daily or every other day.
You do not need to begin with a high percentage. A 2% niacinamide moisturizer has reduced oil production in clinical testing, while 4% and 5% formulas have improved some signs of skin ageing. Those are useful concentrations to consider, not a reason to keep increasing the percentage.2
Should I use niacinamide in the morning or at night?
Either fits the general once or twice daily schedule. For one application, choose morning or evening; for two, use it in both routines. Niacinamide can be paired with vitamin C, retinol, hyaluronic acid and ceramide moisturizers. Niacinamide does not work as sunscreen or prevent sunburn, so morning use does not replace sun protection.12
How long does niacinamide take to work?
Expect weeks rather than an immediate change. With a 2% moisturizer, reduced oil production was measured after four to six weeks. Improvements in eyelid wrinkles were reported after eight weeks with a 4% formula. A 5% formula improved fine lines, pigmentation, texture and redness during a 12 week trial.2
Topical niacinamide has clinical evidence for improvements in pigmentation and signs of skin ageing.34
Does the same schedule apply to a niacinamide mask?
No. Follow the mask's label for frequency and how long to leave it on. Avoid duplicating active ingredients already in your routine, particularly retinol or acids. Wash the mask off immediately if it causes itching, burning or stinging, and see a dermatologist if your skin feels worse afterwards.4
Niacinamide itself can rarely cause itching, mild burning, redness or an allergic reaction. Do not treat those symptoms as a reason to increase use.1
