What does lightening actually mean?
Niacinamide, also called nicotinamide, is a form of vitamin B3. Applied to skin, it has reduced hyperpigmentation in clinical trials. Hyperpigmentation means areas that are darker than the surrounding skin because of extra melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour.34
Skin pigmentation involves both making melanin and transferring it between cells. Melanin is produced inside tiny structures called melanosomes in pigment making cells, then passed to neighbouring skin cells. Changing pigmentation is therefore more complicated than simply scrubbing away surface colour.5
What strength should you use?
A formula with 5% niacinamide is a reasonable option for dark spots: research suggests that concentration can help lighten them. If your skin is sensitive, start slowly with a lower concentration. Niacinamide is generally well tolerated, but gentle does not mean impossible to react to.1
How to use niacinamide for dark spots
- 1Patch test first if you are concerned about a reaction. Apply a small amount to your forearm and wait 24 hours.
- 2Cleanse gently. Niacinamide can generally be used once or twice daily, in your morning or evening routine.
- 3Apply niacinamide after moisturizer, or combine a niacinamide serum with moisturizer and apply them together to your face and neck.
- 4Before going outside, apply sunscreen to skin that clothing will not cover. For dark spots, choose tinted sunscreen with iron oxide, SPF 30 or higher, broad spectrum protection and water resistance.
Niacinamide can be paired with vitamin C, retinol or moisturizers containing ceramides. Avoid using too many niacinamide products at once. A niacinamide moisturizer can replace a separate serum, so the routine does not need a supporting cast.1
Iron oxide helps protect against visible light, which can contribute to dark spots. Look for it in the sunscreen's inactive ingredients. Reapply sunscreen every two hours outdoors and after swimming or sweating. A wide brimmed hat adds protection.6
How long does lightening take?
Expect gradual fading rather than an overnight change. Dark spot treatments can take months to show improvement. As a general guide, once the trigger has stopped, a spot a few shades darker than your natural colour usually fades within 6 to 12 months. Deeper pigment can take years. These are general pigmentation timelines, not a countdown for niacinamide.46
Address what keeps causing the spots. Marks after acne or eczema need control of the underlying condition; irritation from skincare needs gentler products. If you suspect a prescribed medicine is causing pigmentation, ask the prescriber rather than stopping it yourself.6
For persistent facial patches, a dermatologist can check whether the cause is melasma or something else. Pregnancy can trigger melasma, which sometimes fades after delivery but can also persist. Melasma often needs sun protection plus prescribed treatment; results generally take 3 to 12 months. Treatment aims to restore your natural colour, not replace it.2
When should you stop or get help?
Niacinamide can rarely cause itching, redness, burning or an allergic reaction. Stop a product that burns or stings. See a clinician if a dark area is painful, itchy, hot or leaking fluid. If your treatment is not delivering the results you want, a dermatologist can assess the cause and discuss prescription options.146
