Which treatment should you start with?
For small pimples, benzoyl peroxide is especially effective; start with 2.5% to reduce dryness, irritation and burning. For mostly blackheads or whiteheads, salicylic acid helps unclog pores. These are options for mild acne, not a substitute for medical treatment of deep, painful lumps or acne that leaves scars.1
How to treat your chest
- 1Wash your chest with a gentle cleanser morning and evening. Do not scrub: scrubbing can irritate skin and make acne worse.
- 2Use your chosen acne product exactly as its label directs, including frequency and whether to rinse it off. For medication left on the skin, apply a thin layer across the acne prone area rather than only visible spots.
- 3Choose a moisturizer labelled noncomedogenic, meaning formulated not to clog pores. Moisturize morning and evening, and wash and moisturize after exercise.
- 4Wear loose, breathable clothing when exercising or sweating; a workout shirt does not need to double as shrink wrap.
- 5Leave spots alone. Picking or squeezing can cause scars, infection and more blemishes.
What if you need it clear tomorrow?
There is no reliable overnight clearance from acne medication. Give one product 6 to 8 weeks without adding another during that trial. Toothpaste belongs on teeth, even when the bathroom cabinet starts looking like a treatment menu. Toothpaste ingredients do not treat acne and can irritate or harm skin.1
Buying the strongest treatment is not a shortcut. Strong acne products can be too drying for older skin. A pharmacist can help you choose a suitable treatment rather than escalating strength yourself. Greasy skin and hair products can also plug hair follicles, so check products that touch your chest.45
Could the chest bumps be something else?
Ordinary acne and yeast related folliculitis, an inflammation of hair follicles, need different treatments. Malassezia folliculitis causes itchy, superficial bumps that are mostly the same size, usually without blackheads or whiteheads. It can occur with steroid related eruptions and is treated with antifungal medicine rather than ordinary acne treatment. Ask a clinician to assess that pattern instead of repeatedly changing acne products.6
If chest breakouts started after a medication change, tell your prescriber. Oral corticosteroids, testosterone treatments and anabolic steroids can contribute to breakouts. If you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant, speak to a dermatologist before treating acne yourself because some treatments available without a prescription are unsuitable.146
When should you see a doctor?
Get medical help for deep or very painful lumps, scarring, bumps connected beneath the skin or areas draining pus. Do not wait through a home treatment trial for these symptoms. Severe chest acne can require prescription treatment, and early care can help prevent serious scarring. Hot, swollen or red skin also needs assessment for possible infection; redness can be harder to see on brown or black skin.57
