Build the daily routine first

  1. 1Wash gently in the morning and evening. If you have clogged pores, wash after exercise too, and remove makeup before bed. Do not scrub.
  2. 2Moisturize after cleansing. For skin prone to clogged pores, choose an oil free, water based moisturizer labelled noncomedogenic, meaning formulated not to clog pores.
  3. 3Protect your skin from the sun every day. Sun protection belongs in the routine whether you choose an exfoliant or not.

For dry texture, hydration can make skin look smoother. In a hydrating mask, hyaluronic acid helps retain water, glycerin helps soften skin, and ceramides help strengthen the skin barrier. These are options for supporting dry skin, not treatments for clogged pores or scars.1

Should you exfoliate uneven texture?

Chemical exfoliants use acids to dissolve dead surface cells; scrubs, brushes and sponges remove them physically. Dry, sensitive or acne prone skin generally calls for a mild approach because mechanical exfoliation can be too irritating. Exfoliation is not necessary for everyone, so a bathroom shelf can be complete without a product devoted to removing things.4

Before adding an exfoliant, check whether you already use retinol, a prescription retinoid or benzoyl peroxide. Exfoliating alongside these can worsen dryness or cause breakouts. Avoid aggressive chemical or mechanical exfoliation if you have darker skin or develop dark marks after skin injuries: irritation can increase pigmentation.4

Apply exfoliating products gently and moisturize immediately afterward. Never exfoliate sunburned skin or areas with open cuts or wounds. Frequency depends on your skin and the method; stronger exfoliation should be less frequent. Redness and irritation are reasons to reduce or stop exfoliation, not reasons to increase it.4

Which acid helps surface roughness?

Alpha hydroxy acids, or AHAs, include glycolic and lactic acid. They loosen the substances holding surface cells together, allowing old cells to shed and leaving a more even texture and colour. They are useful options for skin showing signs of ageing, including fine lines and brown marks. Glycolic acid can also help skin prone to acne.5

Use a leave on AHA preparation at night, following its directions. Products come in different concentrations and bases for dry, normal and oily skin; stronger preparations are available through medical practitioners. Choose a preparation suited to your skin rather than treating professional peel strength as a home skincare target. AHAs can be alternated with retinoid creams or vitamin C, but adding exfoliation to an irritating routine needs caution.5

Glycolic acid is considered safe in pregnancy. Professional chemical peels need a separate discussion: pregnancy can increase the risk of abnormal pigmentation after a peel.35

What if the texture is small bumps?

Comedones are pores clogged with oil and dead skin cells. Closed comedones are whiteheads; open comedones are blackheads. Comedonal acne often looks like small bumps that match the surrounding skin and are not tender or swollen. A clinician can confirm whether your bumps are acne before you choose treatment.2

Topical options include salicylic acid, retinoids, azelaic acid, benzoyl peroxide and glycolic acid. These are alternatives to discuss, not a list to apply together. Do not pick, squeeze or extract bumps yourself: doing so can cause scars, infection and further damage to pores. Leave extractions to a qualified professional.2

With persistent treatment, comedonal acne can start improving in eight to twelve weeks, while clearing can take many months. AHA peels also improve texture gradually over a few months. Hydration and treatment of blocked pores are different jobs, so do not use the feel of freshly moisturized skin as the timetable for acne treatment.25

Can a face mask smooth texture?

A facial mask can add hydration, but it cannot replace your routine, even if the packaging gives it a starring role. Exfoliating masks can help unclog pores, but avoid duplicating acids or retinol already in your routine. Test a new mask on small areas first, follow the label's frequency and removal time, and moisturize after rinsing it off.1

Avoid masks containing fragrance, essential oils, rubbing alcohol or coarse exfoliants such as walnut shells. Wash a mask off immediately if it causes itching, burning or stinging. If your skin feels worse afterward, see a dermatologist rather than repeating the mask.1

When is professional treatment worth considering?

Chemical peels can improve roughness, fine lines, uneven colour and some mild scarring. Light peels offer subtle improvement, often through a series; medium and deep peels reach further into skin and require more recovery. Deep scars do not respond well to peels and need assessment for other procedures.3

In a small trial involving fifteen women with sun damaged skin, professional peels improved roughness and fine lines, but adding retinoic acid did not significantly improve the results. Pore appearance did not improve with either approach. Smoother texture and less visible pores are separate outcomes.6

Before a peel, tell the dermatologist about medications, unusual scarring and cold sores. Darker skin has a greater risk of darkening after treatment. Retinoid products usually need to be stopped one to two weeks before a peel unless the treating physician directs otherwise. Follow the specific preparation and aftercare instructions for your procedure.3

See a healthcare professional if your acne treatment is not giving you the results you want or medication causes side effects. If you cannot tell whether roughness is dryness, clogged pores or something else, a dermatologist can assess your skin and help decide whether exfoliation is appropriate.24
