Can tight clothes cause body acne?
Yes. Pressure and friction can aggravate existing acne, a problem called acne mechanica. Continued pressure can make inflamed bumps deeper and larger. Heat, humidity, oil and friction also work together to clog pores; sweat alone is not the whole explanation. Clothing related breakouts can appear around the waistline, groin, chest and back, including outside summer.23
Tight clothing can also damage hair follicles, the small pockets where hairs grow, allowing germs inside and causing folliculitis. Hot, damp skin is easier to damage. Folliculitis can resemble a sudden acne breakout and can itch or hurt. Bumps on the buttocks are more often folliculitis or another condition than true acne, so their location alone does not tell you what treatment they need.14
What clothes help prevent body acne?
Choose light, breathable clothing and a looser fit, especially in hot, humid weather. Focus on reducing rubbing where clothes contact the affected area. Rough fabric and seams can irritate sensitive skin, so consider those as well as the size on the label. Breathable fabric and a comfortable fit matter more here than whether the outfit looks professionally committed to exercise.23
Should you change after sweating to prevent acne?
- 1After exercise, remove sweaty, tight clothing immediately. If you cannot shower straight away, at least change into fresh clothes.
- 2Shower after your workout, using a mild, nondrying cleanser and gentle washing rather than scrubbing.
- 3Keep cleansing to once or twice a day, including after exercise, rather than repeatedly washing the same area.
- 4If you need moisturizer, choose a noncomedogenic formula, meaning one designed not to clog pores.
A gentle cleanse is less likely to irritate buttock bumps than vigorous exfoliation, so the shower does not need to become a polishing service. Do not squeeze, scratch or pick breakouts: doing so can cause infection, slower healing and scarring.45
How do you wash workout clothes to prevent breakouts?
For bathing suits and wetsuits, wash after every use and let them dry completely before wearing them again. This reduces exposure to bacteria that can cause folliculitis. For other workout clothing, the immediate priority is getting out of sweaty gear and into fresh clothes after exercise.13
What if changing clothes is not enough?
For persistent acne, a wash containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid is an option. Follow its directions and avoid overuse: acne washes can dry the skin, and acne medicines can cause redness or excessive peeling. Daily use is not always necessary. Benzoyl peroxide can also bleach towels and clothing. Acne treatment can take 6 to 8 weeks to show a response.45
Folliculitis often clears on its own when the trigger stops in someone with a healthy immune system, but some cases need medication. See a dermatologist if bumps persist despite these changes or you are unsure whether they are acne. Get medical care for worsening breakouts, marked redness, deep painful bumps or scarring. Do not try to drain a boil yourself.145
