Chest acne develops when hair follicles become blocked with oil and dead skin cells. Bacteria in blocked follicles can cause inflammation and pus. Sweating, rubbing, greasy products and hormonal changes can contribute, so treatment needs to address both clogged pores and the habits that aggravate them.13
What should you do each day?
- 1Wash your chest gently once or twice a day, including after exercise. Use a mild, nondrying cleanser, and avoid repeated washing or scrubbing.
- 2Use a chest acne treatment, following the product directions carefully and applying it sparingly. A pharmacist can help you choose between benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid.
- 3Check the skincare you apply to your chest. Choose water based or noncomedogenic creams, meaning formulas designed not to clog pores; the useful part of the bottle is the label, not its motivational speech.
- 4Wear loose, breathable clothing for exercise. Shower and change out of sweaty clothes promptly, and wash workout clothes after each use; yesterday's gym shirt is not part of a skincare routine.
Which acne treatment should you choose?
| Treatment | What it does | Practical difference |
|---|---|---|
| Benzoyl peroxide | Targets surface bacteria that aggravate acne. | Available as a wash or a gel left on the skin. Lower concentrations and wash formulas are less irritating. |
| Salicylic acid | Dissolves dead skin cells to help prevent clogged follicles. | Available as a cleanser or lotion. It addresses the material blocking pores. |
| Retinoids, such as adapalene | Break up blackheads and whiteheads and help prevent clogged pores. | Treat the entire affected area rather than individual spots. Positive results can take several months. |
For a gentler benzoyl peroxide option, choose a lower concentration or wash rather than assuming the strongest product is better. Adults with drier skin should be especially careful with strong acne products, which can be too drying. Benzoyl peroxide can bleach towels and clothing, so keep that in mind when applying or rinsing it.36
How long does chest acne take to improve?
Acne often takes six to eight weeks to respond to treatment, and breakouts can return from time to time. Complete clearing of body acne can take three or four months. If you see no difference after six to eight weeks, arrange a dermatologist appointment instead of continuing the same unsuccessful routine indefinitely.34
Acne medicines can cause redness, dryness or excessive peeling. Avoid harsh soaps, abrasive scrubs and loofahs that add irritation. Do not squeeze or pick chest spots: picking can cause infection, slower healing and scars. When your chest is exposed outdoors, use an oil free, noncomedogenic sunscreen with SPF 30, broad spectrum protection and water resistance.34
When should you see a doctor?
Get medical help sooner for lots of spots, deep or painful lumps, scarring, or acne affecting your mental health. Hot, swollen and red skin can signal infection; redness can be harder to see on brown and black skin. Itchy, inflamed bumps can also involve yeast in hair follicles, called folliculitis, so have persistent itchy bumps assessed rather than assuming they are ordinary acne.25
For stubborn chest acne, a doctor can consider prescription skin treatments or oral medicines. Some women benefit from hormonal treatment, including certain birth control pills or spironolactone. Mention medicines you take or recently stopped, particularly testosterone treatments or birth control. Spironolactone requires birth control if you can become pregnant because it can cause serious birth defects. Isotretinoin, used for severe acne, must not be taken during pregnancy.367
