Will loose skin tighten by itself?

Loose skin has lost elasticity and firmness. Ageing and significant weight loss are common causes, and genetics also affect how skin responds. After major weight loss, loose skin is unlikely to shrink away on its own. The longer someone has been overweight, the less likely the skin is to recover.3

What can exercise and creams do?

Weight training targets the muscle beneath loose skin, not the excess skin itself, despite the administrative convenience of calling both "toning". Choose exercise for muscle building rather than expecting it to remove hanging folds.3

A moisturizer temporarily plumps skin and needs daily use to maintain that effect. Retinol can support collagen production, with small changes possible. A firming cream cannot lift sagging skin, however much responsibility the packaging assigns to a jar. Products containing collagen or vitamin E can support hydration, not eliminate excess skin.13

Radiofrequency using inserted needles or a thin tube is also used on upper arms. Results usually appear around one month. It requires sedation, wound care, a ride home and sometimes a compression garment for 4 or 5 days.1

Small amounts of sagging and a stable, healthy weight favour better results. Substantial hanging skin is less suited to tightening procedures. These procedures are unsuitable during pregnancy, with a skin infection or with certain medications. Review your medicines with a board certified dermatologist.1

When does an arm lift make more sense?

An arm lift, called brachioplasty, removes excess upper arm skin rather than trying to tighten it. It reshapes the underside of the upper arm. For hanging folds after significant weight loss, discuss skin removal with a qualified plastic surgeon. Surgery carries risks. Ask about the surgeon's credentials, specialist training and how many procedures they have performed.23

While deciding about treatment, loose clothing can reduce chafing. Compression garments can help manage the appearance of loose skin. Skin folds need care to prevent rashes and fungal infections; seek medical assessment if folds become painful, irritated or develop a rash.3

What is the difference between the arm and upper arm?

The upper arm is the section from the armpit to the elbow. An arm lift targets the underside of that section, rather than the whole arm.2
