Why does dehydration cause dry skin?

Dehydration happens when your body loses more fluid than you take in. When water is scarce, your body conserves moisture by pulling it away from less critical areas, including your skin. Sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, fever and not drinking enough can all contribute.145

Dry skin also develops when the skin itself loses too much water and oil. Cold or dry weather, indoor heating or cooling, frequent bathing, soaps, aging and certain medicines can cause dryness. Eczema and some health conditions can also be responsible. Dry skin alone does not tell you which cause applies.2

Check whether you are dehydrated, not just dry

Look for thirst, a dry mouth, dark urine, less urination than usual, tiredness or dizziness alongside dry skin. These are signs of body dehydration. Skin dryness can instead show up as scaling, itching, redness and fine cracks. If the cause is unclear, a clinician can examine your skin and review your health history; blood or urine tests can help investigate suspected dehydration.125

How to treat it

  1. 1Replace lost fluids. Mild dehydration can usually be treated by drinking water. Significant fluid loss through sweating, vomiting or diarrhea can also require electrolytes, the minerals that help balance body fluids. An electrolyte drink or oral rehydration solution can help replace them.
  2. 2Wash gently. Use lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser without dyes or perfume. Keep showers to five to ten minutes, and avoid scrubbing. Pat dry with a towel instead of rubbing.
  3. 3Apply moisturizer promptly. For ordinary dry skin, apply moisturizer while the skin is still damp, ideally within three minutes of showering. This helps trap the remaining moisture.
  4. 4Repeat daily and as needed. Use an emollient, a moisturizer that softens skin and holds in water, every day. Dryness determines whether you need it once, twice or several times daily.
  5. 5Reduce ongoing moisture loss. Protect exposed skin from cold wind and reduce contact with harsh soaps. In a dry home, use a humidifier and aim for humidity between 30% and 50%.

What helps dry skin caused by dehydration?

Moisturizers keep water in the outer skin layer, which is a more useful assignment than giving the bathroom shelf another resident. Choose a fragrance free product. Ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin and petrolatum are options used in moisturizers to support the skin's moisture barrier.34

Ointments are oil based and greasy; creams mix oil and water and feel less greasy. A lighter product can suit daytime, with an ointment at night. For very dry, cracked skin associated with asteatotic eczema, a form of eczema caused by water loss from the outer skin layer, greasy creams or ointments are preferred over watery or scented lotions.36

Urea and lactic acid are ingredients used in creams or lotions for dry skin. If you also have rosacea, avoid both: they can irritate rosacea prone skin. With rosacea, let your face dry before moisturizing to reduce burning or stinging, rather than following the usual damp skin approach.27

Emollient washes can clean without bubbles, so a convincing foam performance is not part of the job. They can replace soap, which dries the skin. Apply leave on emollients in the direction of hair growth to reduce irritation around hair follicles. For a tub, use a clean spoon rather than putting your fingers inside.3

How long does improvement take?

Mild dehydration should improve within less than a day once you replace enough fluid and resolve the cause. Emollients can make skin feel softer and less rough from the start of treatment. Healing takes longer: dry, cracked skin from asteatotic eczema can take a couple of weeks to rehydrate and heal. Feeling less thirsty is not the same milestone as healed skin.356

How can you prevent dry skin caused by dehydration?

Drink water throughout the day, including at meals, rather than waiting until you feel thirsty. Fluid needs differ, so there is no single daily amount for everyone. Drink extra in hot weather, during outdoor work or exercise, and when sick. If liquids are difficult to keep down, try small sips or ice chips. Pale or straw colored urine is a useful hydration check; darker urine signals that you need more fluid.15

Indoor heating lowers humidity, so the room can be comfortable while the skincare situation files a complaint. Keep moisturizing even when dryness settles. Wear gloves for cold weather, washing dishes and handling cleaning products. Avoid treating every flake with exfoliation: it can remove moisture and oils. Retinol and some acne products can also add to dryness, especially in winter.4

Who needs extra care?

Older adults can have a reduced sense of thirst. Infants and young children are also more vulnerable, especially with vomiting or diarrhea. Some illnesses and medicines increase fluid loss through urination or sweating. For a dehydrated child, follow their clinician's instructions about fluids and electrolyte solutions. Dry, itchy, cracked patches that persist despite moisturizer need assessment rather than an assumption that more drinking water will fix them.156

If you use prescribed skin treatments, ask which product goes first. Some treatments need a gap of 20 to 30 minutes from emollients. Persistent stinging or a rash calls for a different moisturizer with clinical advice. Emollients can make bathing surfaces slippery, and residue on clothing or bedding is a fire hazard near naked flames.3

When to get medical help

Get immediate medical help for confusion, fainting, no urination, a rapid heartbeat or rapid breathing. Severe dehydration needs medical treatment, often fluids through a vein. Seek prompt care if cracked skin becomes painful or swollen, leaks fluid or pus, or comes with fever or chills. These can be signs of infection.16
