Why skin gets dry without dehydration

Dehydration means your body does not have enough water and fluids. Dry skin means the skin lacks moisture, which can happen because of cold weather, low humidity, frequent washing or harsh soaps. Skin also tends to become drier with age, and some people inherit a tendency to dryness. Tightness, roughness, mild itching and cracking can all accompany ordinary dry skin.123

Cold air and indoor heating reduce moisture in the air, so winter gives your moisturizer more work without asking its permission. If dryness appears during colder months, consider the weather and your washing routine alongside how much you drink.4

What else points to dehydration?

Thirst, a dry or sticky mouth, darker yellow urine and urinating less are signs of mild to moderate dehydration. Headache, muscle cramps and dry, cool skin can occur too. Dehydration is more likely after heavy sweating, fever, vomiting or diarrhea, or when you have not been drinking enough. Older adults and people with diabetes have a higher risk; medicines such as diuretics can also increase fluid loss through urination.1

If you have mild dehydration symptoms, try sipping water. Drink fluids regularly, with more during hot weather or exercise. Treat skin dryness locally as well: drinking water and applying moisturizer address different needs, so extra water is not a replacement for dry skin care.12

How to care for dry skin

  1. 1Wash with lukewarm rather than hot water, and keep baths or showers to 5 to 10 minutes.
  2. 2Use a gentle cleanser without fragrance or added dyes. Avoid harsh soaps and excessive washing.
  3. 3Gently pat dry, leaving a little water on the skin rather than rubbing it completely dry.
  4. 4Apply moisturizer to dry areas within three minutes of leaving the bath or shower to help hold that moisture in.
  5. 5Reapply a plain moisturizer whenever skin feels dry, including after hand washing. Use a humidifier if your surroundings are cold and dry.

A richer cream or ointment is useful for winter dryness. Look for a moisturizer that combines ingredients that attract water, reduce moisture loss and soften skin. For sensitive skin, choose a formula with few ingredients and introduce only one new product at a time.3456

If you use prescription skin creams, follow your prescriber's layering instructions; some treatments need to go on before moisturizer. Check whether your moisturizer contains a medicine such as hydrocortisone before treating it as something to reapply freely.6

Is dry, flaky skin a sign of dehydration?

Flaking alone is not enough to identify dehydration. It is a common feature of dry skin, but persistent flaking can also come from dermatitis, meaning skin inflammation. Intense itching, swelling, a rash or oozing deserve assessment rather than simply more water. Scalp flakes can be dandruff, which has causes ranging from oily skin to hair care habits and medical conditions.237

When should you get medical help?

Moisturizers can ease dryness, itching and scaling, but there is no fixed recovery time for every cause. Arrange an appointment if regular moisturizing does not help, itching disrupts sleep, or you develop pain, increasing redness, crusting or oozing.26

Severe dehydration is an emergency. Call your local emergency number for confusion, loss of consciousness, signs of heatstroke such as rapid breathing or a rapid pulse, or worsening symptoms despite treatment.1
