Which CeraVe moisturizer should you choose?
For normal to dry mature skin, CeraVe Moisturizing Cream is a practical starting point. The US formula is fragrance free and contains three essential ceramides, hyaluronic acid, petrolatum and dimethicone. Ceramides are naturally present in skin. The cream helps support the skin's protective barrier, which keeps moisture in and irritants out. Petrolatum helps seal in moisture, while the rich cream absorbs quickly with a nongreasy feel. You can use the same cream on your face and body.34
If you prefer a lighter texture, CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion has a lightweight, oil free formula. Mature skin can still be oily, so a rich cream is not automatically the right choice. For sensitive skin, look for a product labelled for sensitive skin. Fragrance free is useful, but it does not mean a product cannot cause a reaction. Check the ingredients on your package because formulas change.23
Will CeraVe reduce wrinkles?
Moisturizer traps water in skin and temporarily adds fullness, making fine lines less noticeable. That is useful for mature skin because skin becomes drier with age. It is different from treating every sign of aging, including deeper wrinkles or loss of firmness. Cosmetic creams offer modest improvements, not a facelift with a screw top. Give moisturizer and sunscreen a few weeks before deciding whether you want an additional product for one specific concern.125
How should you use CeraVe for mature skin?
- 1Wash with a mild cleanser and warm water morning and evening. Avoid scrubbing.
- 2Apply moisturizer. CeraVe tells you to apply Moisturizing Cream liberally to your face and body as often as needed, day or night.
- 3In the morning, apply sunscreen after your moisturizer has absorbed. Choose broad spectrum protection, meaning protection against UVA and UVB rays, with SPF 30 or higher. Use a water resistant sunscreen for outdoor activity.
- 4Apply sunscreen about 15 minutes before going outdoors and reapply every two hours while outdoors, and after swimming or sweating. Add shade and protective clothing rather than relying on sunscreen alone.
- 5Apply makeup after sunscreen, once your skin has dried. At night, finish with moisturizer without SPF.
A moisturizer with broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher can combine the morning moisturizing and sunscreen steps, but it still needs sunscreen reapplication. CeraVe's US Skin Renewing Day Cream contains encapsulated retinol, hyaluronic acid, ceramides and broad spectrum SPF 30. Follow that product's own directions rather than borrowing instructions from a separate retinol serum.6
What if wrinkles are your main concern?
Retinol helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles by increasing skin cell turnover and slowing collagen breakdown. Collagen is a protein that gives skin structure and support. General guidance places a separate retinol product in the evening routine. Improvements usually start around three months with regular use. Retinol can irritate skin, particularly sensitive skin or skin new to retinol. A thin layer of moisturizer before a separate retinol product can help reduce irritation. If you already use retinol, avoid doubling up with another retinol cream.1
Is CeraVe eye cream good for wrinkles in mature skin?
The answer depends on the exact eye cream's ingredients. Hyaluronic acid and ceramides help hydrate the delicate eye area, making wrinkles less visible through hydration. For a treatment aimed at wrinkles, retinol is an ingredient to look for; peptides can help with firmness. Those are ingredient benefits, not a promise about every CeraVe eye cream. Apply a small amount with gentle pats rather than pulling or rubbing, and avoid strongly scented formulas that can irritate the eye area.7
