Which Innisfree sunscreen do you have?

The US SPF 50+, older US SPF 36 and Malaysian SPF 30 are distinct versions; match the country, SPF and ingredients on your bottle. Innisfree's Daily UV Defense name appears on different SPF versions, so the name alone is doing less administrative work than it looks.34

VersionWhat to check
US Daily UV Defense SPF 50+Avobenzone 2.5%, homosalate 7.0% and octisalate 4.3%. Explicitly formulated without oxybenzone and octinoxate.
US Daily UV Defense SPF 36The label lists avobenzone 2.5%, homosalate 7.0% and octisalate 4.3%. Do not substitute the SPF 50+ ingredient list.
Malaysia Daily UV Defense SPF 30Use the package ingredient list to identify its filters before choosing it for a reef destination.

For the US SPF 50+, Innisfree tells you to use the individual package for the latest ingredients because formulas can change. If you are avoiding a particular filter, read the active ingredients rather than relying on the product name or an older shopping page.3

Why does the filter list matter?

Some sunscreen ingredients can harm coral, especially oxybenzone when its concentration in water is high. The number of swimmers and the shape of the shoreline affect exposure, and concentrations in some places exceed levels associated with coral harm. Excluding oxybenzone therefore addresses a real concern, but it does not answer every environmental question about the remaining formula.6

Experiments involving coral branches found that some organic UV filters triggered viral activity in the algae living inside coral and caused bleaching. Bleaching means coral loses those algae, which support the reef ecosystem. Sunscreen exposure is one concern alongside temperature changes, intense light, pollution and disease; coral damage is not a single ingredient problem.7

What should you take to a reef destination?

Restrictions differ by location. Some destinations restrict oxybenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene or avobenzone, and mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are generally preferred there. Check the current rules for the specific place you will visit, not just the country name. The SPF number describes sun protection, not how welcome the bottle is at a reef.2

Maui County is a specific warning for the US SPF 50+: Innisfree does not ship this product there because local law prohibits sale and distribution of sunscreens containing chemical UV filters. For that destination, do not choose this lotion merely because it excludes oxybenzone and octinoxate.1

How should you protect your skin?

Keep using sun protection while choosing a suitable formula. Sunscreen helps prevent sunburn, skin ageing and skin cancer. Protective clothing also reduces UV exposure, so a reef conscious choice does not require leaving your skin unprotected.26

For daily use of the US SPF 50+:

  1. 1Apply sunscreen after moisturizer and before makeup.
  2. 2Spread it generously and evenly over your face, neck and exposed body at least 15 minutes before sun exposure.
  3. 3Reapply every two hours.
3

Swimming needs a separate check: the older US SPF 36 label directs you to use a water resistant sunscreen when swimming or sweating. Choose a product whose own label covers water exposure and follow its reapplication directions.5
