Can you shave every day?

Yes. Daily shaving is a common way to maintain a clean shaven appearance because hair can reappear within hours or a few days. Shaving removes hair at skin level rather than stopping growth, so the smooth finish comes with an unusually short lease. The practical question is whether your technique lets you maintain that appearance without repeated itching, cuts or razor burn.1

Should you shave every day?

Choose the schedule around the problem you are having. For recurring ingrown hairs, shaving every second day and leaving about 1 mm of stubble can help; for some people with razor bumps, daily shaving or shaving every 2 to 3 days helps by giving hairs less time to grow and curve. There is no single technique that works for everyone. Coarse or curly hair is more likely to grow back into the skin, and stopping shaving is the most reliable way to prevent shaving related ingrown hairs.234

How to shave with less irritation

  1. 1Soften the hair with warm water. Shave after a shower or hold a warm, damp washcloth against the area first.
  2. 2Apply shaving cream or gel and leave it for 2 to 3 minutes to soften the hair further. Choose a sensitive skin formula if your skin is very dry or sensitive.
  3. 3Shave in the direction the hair grows, using light strokes and as few passes as possible. Avoid stretching the skin tight, especially if you get ingrown hairs.
  4. 4Use a sharp blade and rinse it after every stroke. Replace disposable razors after 5 to 7 shaves, or sooner if the blade becomes blunt or damaged.
  5. 5Rinse after shaving, then use cool water or a cool, damp cloth to reduce irritation. Finish with a moisturiser.
  6. 6Let the razor dry completely between uses and store it somewhere dry, not in the shower or on a wet sink.

Would another razor help?

If you keep getting ingrown hairs, try an electric razor or a single blade rather than a multiple blade razor. Wet shaving usually cuts closer than an electric razor, but cutting too close can let hairs retract beneath the skin. If you have facial acne, experiment with electric or disposable razors, shave lightly and never try to shave off spots: shaving can make acne worse.2356

Does daily shaving make hair thicker?

Shaving does not make hair grow back thicker; the cut end feels stiffer and looks thicker, which gives a blunt tip a surprisingly successful publicity campaign. An unshaven hair has a tapered tip, explaining the difference in feel.1

When should you stop or get help?

Stop shaving irritated skin until the irritation resolves. Shaving bumps caused by trapped hairs can take 4 to 6 weeks to settle after stopping hair removal. Do not scratch, pick or squeeze ingrown hairs, because this can damage skin and lead to infection.123

See a doctor if an ingrown hair becomes very painful, hot or swollen, or if you develop a high temperature or feel shivery or very unwell. Folliculitis means inflammation of the openings where hairs grow; it can cause clusters of tender or pus filled bumps. If it worsens or does not resolve within three days, see a doctor. Persistent razor bumps despite changing your habits also need a dermatologist's attention, because untreated bumps can leave scars.246
