The categories overlap: skin creams and makeup both count as cosmetics, so the beauty aisle's division is more dramatic than the definition. Products that treat or prevent disease are also drugs. A tinted sunscreen can offer sun protection while evening skin tone, making it a useful option if you want fewer separate products.23

What should you prioritize?

Start with a cleanser suited to your skin, moisturizer as needed and sunscreen. A basic routine does not need to be complicated or expensive, despite the beauty aisle's enthusiasm for both. Price alone does not tell you whether a product will help. Add a targeted product only when you have a concern to address, such as acne or dark spots.15

Makeup offers a change in appearance when you apply it; skincare results need consistent use. Allow at least 30 days to assess whether a skincare product is helping, unless it irritates your skin. Switching products repeatedly can leave you with irritation instead of progress.5

How do you use skincare and makeup together?

  1. 1Cleanse in the morning. Use lukewarm water, gently massage the cleanser onto your face and pat dry rather than rubbing.
  2. 2Apply your skincare. If you use acne medication, apply it before makeup. Use moisturizer when your skin needs it.
  3. 3Apply sunscreen after skincare and before makeup. Choose SPF 30 or higher with broad spectrum protection and water resistance. Apply it 15 minutes before going outdoors and give it a few minutes to dry before makeup.
  4. 4Apply makeup gently. Avoid rubbing or pressing hard, especially if your skin is prone to acne.
  5. 5Remove makeup, including eye makeup, before bed. Follow the remover with a gentle cleanser, then finish your evening skincare. Wash after sweating, too.

Can makeup with SPF replace sunscreen?

Do not rely on SPF makeup alone. People generally apply less makeup than the amount used in SPF testing, so the protection falls short of the label rating. Use separate sunscreen underneath. Reapply sunscreen about every two hours, and more frequently when swimming or sweating. Protect exposed areas beyond your face, including your neck and arms.3

Can you wear makeup if you have acne?

Yes. Look for makeup labelled "oil free," "won't clog pores" or "noncomedogenic," meaning formulated not to clog pores. Some makeup can cause breakouts, which can appear days to months after you start using it. Stop using makeup that causes breakouts. Clean brushes weekly and do not share makeup or applicators. If the cause is unclear or acne continues, a dermatologist can help identify the problem and treatment.4

Is skincare always gentler than makeup?

No. Both skincare and makeup can cause allergic reactions, often starting with red, irritated skin. "Natural" and "hypoallergenic" have no official meaning on cosmetic labels. Introduce new products one at a time. For sensitive skin, test a small amount behind your ear along the jawline and wait a day or two before applying it across your face. Stop using a product that irritates your skin, and seek medical advice for unusual skin symptoms.125
