What can it actually do?

Retinol is a form of vitamin A in the retinoid family. It supports collagen, the protein that keeps skin firm, and helps shed dead skin cells. Those actions can improve texture, uneven pigmentation and the appearance of fine lines. These are general retinol benefits, not a reason to expect a particular result from The Ordinary's bottles.1

The strongest reason to keep expectations modest is the weak evidence for cosmetic retinol improving facial aging. Any wrinkle benefit could be mild, and convincing clinical results remain scarce. The marketing promises are more polished than the clinical evidence.2

Which strength should you choose?

Here, The Ordinary retinol means Retinol 0.5% in Squalane and Retinol 1% in Squalane; Retinal 0.2% Emulsion and Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion are separate products.1

Retinol 0.5% in SqualaneMedium strength30 ml$9.30
Retinol 1% in SqualaneHigh strength30 ml$9.90

Between these two, 0.5% is the more cautious starting choice. Dermatologists advise beginning with the least intense formula you can find, so medium strength does not automatically mean beginner strength. The 1% bottle is not the sensible default for a first retinol purchase. Both bottles are listed below $10, so the entry fee is smaller than the product name.13

How should you start using it?

Follow your bottle's application directions. The sequence below is general retinol guidance, rather than a specific drop count for The Ordinary's liquid formulas.4

  1. 1First, test a little on a small area of skin. Wait a couple of days and check for redness or itching before applying it more widely.
  2. 2At bedtime, wash with a gentle cleanser and pat your skin dry. Do not scrub.
  3. 3Apply a thin layer using the amount directed on your bottle. Keep retinol away from your eyes, mouth and inside your nose.
  4. 4Finish with a moisturizer. Start every other night, or once every few days if you need a slower introduction, and increase gradually as tolerated.
  5. 5During the day, apply sunscreen to uncovered skin and use shade and protective clothing.

How long before you notice a difference?

Visible changes in how skin looks and feels take several weeks. Fine lines and dark spots usually require months of retinol use. Skin can look worse during the initial adjustment, but worsening irritation is not a reason to apply more. Increasing the amount or frequency too quickly can cause redness and peeling.45

Who should be careful or skip it?

Retinol is a less appealing choice if your skin is already dry, sensitive or prone to allergies. Retinoids can worsen eczema. If you have substantial redness or inflammation, ask a dermatologist about alternatives before starting. Irritation can trigger dark marks in darker skin, making a slow introduction and moisturizer especially useful. Do not use retinoids during pregnancy; discuss use while breastfeeding with your healthcare provider.346

Dryness, burning, itching and peeling are possible side effects. Pause use if irritation becomes excessive, and seek medical advice if the inflamed rash persists. For moderate or severe acne scarring, or acne linked to hormonal changes, see a dermatologist rather than relying on a cosmetic retinol serum.345
