What makes retinal different from retinol?
Retinal is short for retinaldehyde, a form of vitamin A. Retinoids are the wider family of vitamin A ingredients. Before retinol can act in the skin, it must become retinal and then retinoic acid, the active form. Retinal needs only the final conversion. That makes retinal and retinol different ingredients, not interchangeable names for the same percentage. A 0.1% retinal serum should not be read as equivalent to a 0.1% retinol serum.3
What is the texture, and what else is in it?
Crystal Retinal is a creamy emulsion serum rather than a replacement night cream, so the word serum has not relieved it of its moisturiser paperwork. Medik8 uses an encapsulation system and an airless tube to help keep retinal stable through use. The intended routine still finishes with moisturiser.13
The US Crystal Retinal 10 formula lists glycerin, squalane, sodium hyaluronate and tocopheryl acetate, a form of vitamin E, alongside retinal. Glycerin helps retain moisture, while hyaluronic acid draws moisture into the skin. The same US formula also lists vanilla extract, tonka bean extract, coumarin and Red 4. Formulas differ by region and can change, so use your tube's ingredient list when checking for ingredients you need to avoid. Do not assume every Crystal Retinal strength or market has an identical formula.24
Which Crystal Retinal strength should you choose?
These are the dollar prices displayed on Medik8's international storefront, not UK or US price quotes.
| Product | Retinal concentration | Intended user | International storefront price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crystal Retinal 1 | 0.01% | Very sensitive skin | $56 |
| Crystal Retinal 3 | 0.03% | Vitamin A beginner | $66 |
| Crystal Retinal 6 | 0.06% | Regular vitamin A user | $87 |
| Crystal Retinal 10 | 0.1% | Advanced vitamin A user | $111 |
| Crystal Retinal 20 | 0.2% | Highly experienced vitamin A user | $123 |
Choose 10 if you already have substantial vitamin A experience or are ready to move beyond 6. Choose 3 for a first vitamin A routine, and consider 1 for particularly sensitive skin. Medik8's strength ladder is a way to increase strength gradually, not a loyalty scheme for collecting larger numbers. The UK and US ranges also include Crystal Retinal 24 at 0.24%; 10 is an advanced option, not the highest available strength.235
How do you use Medik8 Crystal Retinal?
- 1Before first use, patch test at least 24 hours in advance.
- 2Cleanse your face in the evening.
- 3Apply two pumps of Crystal Retinal across the face and neck, then allow it to absorb.
- 4Follow with moisturiser.
- 5Apply sunscreen the next morning.
If your existing routine includes toner or other serums, Crystal Retinal goes after those and before moisturiser. Medik8 places its emulsion serum after both water based and oil based serums. That is a layering order, not a requirement to add more products. Cleanser, Crystal Retinal and moisturiser form the core evening sequence; sunscreen belongs in the following morning's routine.3
How often should you use Crystal Retinal 10?
For first use of Crystal Retinal, Medik8 tells you to apply it twice weekly for the first two weeks, every other night for the next two weeks, then nightly. Nightly use is the destination after building tolerance, not the starting instruction. Being familiar with another vitamin A product does not change the fact that 10 is an advanced strength.5
Moving between established Crystal Retinal strengths is different from starting the range. Medik8's Australian directions say you do not need to repeat the introductory schedule when moving up the ladder, but you must finish at least one tube of the previous strength first. Build tolerance before advancing rather than choosing the next strength simply because the current tube is empty.6
How do you use Medik8 Crystal Retinal 3?
Crystal Retinal 3 follows the same evening application steps and introductory schedule above. Its beginner positioning changes which tube to start with, not the order of your routine. Start with 3 if you are new to vitamin A rather than buying 10 and treating occasional application as a substitute for choosing an appropriate strength. Finish at least one tube before considering a move to 6.5
What is Medik8 Crystal Retinal 6?
Crystal Retinal 6 is the 0.06% option for regular vitamin A users. It is also the strength tested in Medik8's 12 week clinical study involving 33 participants. The reported results included a 20% reduction in the appearance of wrinkles, a 20% reduction in visible pigmentation and an 11% increase in visible firmness. For judging progress, 12 weeks is a more useful reference than expecting a finished result after a few applications. Crystal Retinal 10 has no separate, confirmed results timeline here; the figures above belong to 6.4
What is Medik8 Crystal Retinal 20?
Crystal Retinal 20 contains 0.2% retinal, twice the concentration of 10. Medik8 positions it for highly experienced vitamin A users who have finished two tubes of Crystal Retinal 10. That specific two tube requirement matters more than the general advice to finish one tube before increasing strength. A doubled concentration describes the formula, not a promise of doubled visible improvement.1
Can you use it during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Medik8 recommends avoiding vitamin A products during pregnancy or breastfeeding and discussing the ingredients with your GP or midwife before use. That applies to Crystal Retinal 10 as well as the lower strengths. Choosing a smaller number is not an alternative to that advice.7
