What does Crystal Retinal 20 do?

Retinaldehyde, usually shortened to retinal, is a retinoid: a form of vitamin A. Crystal Retinal targets the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, uneven texture and loss of firmness. The 20 version sits near the top of Medik8's strength range, above Crystal Retinal 10 and below Crystal Retinal 24.13

Retinal and retinol are not interchangeable names. Skin converts retinal to retinoic acid, the active form of vitamin A, in one step; retinol requires two. Crystal Retinal 20 contains 0.2% retinal, not 0.2% retinol. If you are moving from another vitamin A product, choose by your experience and tolerance rather than looking for the same percentage on a different tube.4

Is 20 the right strength for you?

Choose Crystal Retinal 20 if you already have substantial vitamin A experience and are progressing from Crystal Retinal 10. Medik8's US directions place 20 after at least one finished tube of 10. A beginner should start lower: Crystal Retinal 3 is the beginner option, while Crystal Retinal 1 is intended for particularly sensitive skin.13

Sensitive skin needs time to adjust to vitamin A. Start with a lower strength and introduce it gradually rather than treating Crystal Retinal 20 as the starting point. Medik8 describes moving to a higher strength after a few months of getting used to a lower strength.5

How to apply Crystal Retinal 20

Before first use, apply a small amount to the inside of your wrist and wait 24 hours. Check for irritation before proceeding to a full application. If the test area becomes irritated, do not proceed with the full application.5

How often should you use it?

Medik8 tells new Crystal Retinal users to build up application gradually:

• For the first two weeks, use it twice a week.
• For the next two weeks, use it every other night.
• Then move to nightly application.

Dryness can occur as skin adjusts to vitamin A. Apply to clean, dry skin before bed and follow with moisturizer to help offset that dryness. The gradual introduction matters particularly for sensitive skin.5

Where does it fit in your routine?

Medik8 describes Crystal Retinal as a serum cream, which is the skincare industry's way of declining to choose a noun. Massage it over the face and neck, then let it absorb before applying moisturizer. It is an evening product, not the vitamin A step in your morning routine.6

Medik8's routine pairs vitamin A at night with vitamin C and sunscreen during the day. For morning protection, use a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30. Broad spectrum protection covers both UVA and UVB exposure. How long do results take?

Visible benefits from vitamin A can take four to twelve weeks to start appearing, with timing depending on the strength used. Think in weeks of regular use rather than expecting the next morning's application to show the full effect.5

The widely advertised 20% reduction in wrinkles, 20% reduction in visible dark spots and 11% increase in firmness are results for Crystal Retinal 6. That trial involved 33 participants over twelve weeks. There is no corresponding numerical result for Crystal Retinal 20 here, so those percentages are not a forecast for your tube of 20.3

What else is in the formula?

Alongside retinal, Medik8 highlights glycerin, hyaluronic acid and vitamin E in the Crystal Retinal range. Glycerin helps retain moisture, hyaluronic acid draws moisture into the skin, and vitamin E provides antioxidant support. How does 20 compare with 10 and 24?

The US price rises with these upper strengths, so the ladder is not purely metaphorical.
