Choose Moisturizing Cream if you want a petrolatum containing formula, Daily Moisturizing Lotion if you prefer the lotion format, or Intensive Moisturizing Cream if you want shea butter and hydroxyethyl urea. The Moisturizing Cream Refill also lists the same ingredients as the cream. These prices are listing prices, not a comparison of equal sized containers.1

CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion, AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30 and SPF 50, Ultra Light Moisturizing Gel, Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Water Gel Face Moisturizer and Oil Control Moisturizing Gel Cream list niacinamide. Check the exact product, because the brand name is not an ingredient list wearing a larger font.1

Does Vanicream Moisturizing Cream qualify?

No. Vanicream Moisturizing Cream contains neither niacinamide nor ceramides, so it misses the ceramide part of your request. Vanicream identifies Daily Facial Moisturizer as its ceramide containing alternative. Vanicream Moisturizing Cream and Daily Facial Moisturizer are different products, despite names that make shopping feel like a proofreading exercise. Before choosing Daily Facial Moisturizer, check its own full ingredient list for niacinamide rather than using the cream's label.2

What do ceramides do?

Ceramides are fats in the skin's outermost layer. Along with cholesterol and fatty acids, they help form the barrier that keeps moisture in and irritants out. Using a moisturizer with ceramides supports that barrier; choosing one without niacinamide still gives you the ceramide component.34

For dry skin, ceramides are only part of a useful formula. Glycerin and hyaluronic acid draw water into skin, softening ingredients smooth the surface, and sealing ingredients slow water loss. Dry skin lacks oil, while dehydrated skin lacks water; both can occur together. If dryness is your ongoing skin type, the goal is to manage it with consistent moisture care rather than expect a permanent cure.5

How should you use a ceramide moisturizer?

Use this general routine alongside the directions on your chosen moisturizer.

  1. 1Cleanse gently. Mild, fragrance free cleansers tend to be less irritating than harsh soaps. Cleanse your face before bed.
  2. 2Apply moisturizer after bathing or showering. Use moisturizer every day and reapply through the day when needed.
  3. 3In the morning, finish with a broad spectrum sunscreen rated SPF 30 or higher. Reapply sunscreen when outdoors.
36

You can change moisturizers with the seasons if your usual formula no longer meets your needs. If products you previously tolerated now sting or your skin stays tight despite moisturizing, simplify the routine rather than adding more active ingredients.36

Severe or persistent flaking that does not improve with a consistent routine deserves a dermatologist's assessment. It can indicate eczema or another condition that needs different treatment, rather than simply a different moisturizer.5
