| Barrier support | Helps skin make lipids and reduce water loss. | Replenishes lipids that help hold the barrier together. |
| Other benefits | Can improve pigmentation, facial oiliness and fine lines. | Helps keep skin hydrated, soft and protected. |
| Product formats | Found in cleansers, serums and moisturizers. | Found in moisturizers, serums, lotions and creams. |
| Strength | Research includes formulas containing 2%, 4% and 5%. | Choose a moisturizing formula rather than matching a niacinamide percentage. |
Which should you choose?
Prioritize a ceramide moisturizer if dryness and moisture retention are your main concerns. Skin replenishes its natural ceramides more slowly with age, and reduced ceramide levels also occur in eczema. Added ceramides help restore those barrier lipids. Choose niacinamide if you also want to address excess oil, dark spots or uneven texture. Niacinamide and ceramides can work together, so the comparison does not need a winner's podium.23
Can you use niacinamide and ceramides together?
Yes. Niacinamide pairs well with moisturizers containing ceramides. The two ingredients support the same barrier through different routes: ceramides supply barrier fats, while niacinamide encourages skin to produce lipids, including ceramides. A moisturizer can contain both ingredients, which saves the bathroom shelf from hosting another committee. Ceramide formulas can also include glycerin or hyaluronic acid to attract water, alongside ingredients that help keep that moisture in.2345
How do you use them?
- 1Cleanse gently before applying your skincare.
- 2Apply your ceramide moisturizer while skin is still damp, ideally within three minutes of washing your face or showering.
- 3If using separate niacinamide, apply it after the moisturizer. Another option is to combine a niacinamide serum with your moisturizer and apply them together to your face and neck.
- 4Use niacinamide once or twice daily. With sensitive skin, start slowly with a low concentration; most products contain 5% or less.
How long do results take?
For niacinamide, think in weeks rather than applications. A 2% niacinamide moisturizer reduced facial oil production over four to six weeks in a clinical trial. A 5% formula improved pigmentation, texture, fine lines and red blotchiness during a 12 week trial. These are useful reference points for those formulas, not a deadline for every niacinamide product. Ceramides mainly support hydration and barrier function; there is no single result timetable to apply to every ceramide moisturizer.23
What if your skin is sensitive?
Niacinamide is generally well tolerated, but it can cause itching, redness, mild burning or an allergic reaction. Test a small amount on your forearm and wait 24 hours before wider use if you are concerned. Stop using a product that causes a reaction. If twice daily niacinamide gel causes excessive dryness, reduce application to once daily or every other day. A ceramide barrier cream can still contain fragrances, preservatives or other ingredients that trigger contact allergy. Some occlusive barrier creams can also aggravate facial acne, so choose the whole formula, not just the highlighted ingredient.245
