What results are realistic?

Immediate smoothing usually comes from hydration: a moisturizer plumps the skin so fine lines look less obvious. That effect is temporary, and daily application is needed to maintain it. Actual tightening from a cream is subtle at best, and some people see no improvement. Moisturizing and lifting are different jobs, even when the jar applies for both.1

Can you use face cream on your neck?

Many face products can also be used on the neck and upper chest. The catch is tolerance: neck skin can be thinner and more sensitive than facial skin, with fewer oil glands. A retinol strength that suits your face can therefore be too irritating for your neck.2

How to choose a neck cream

Start with moisturizer and sunscreen, then give them a few weeks before adding a product for a remaining concern. Choose one concern, such as fine wrinkles, rather than buying several treatments at once. No product treats every sign of aging, and introducing several products over a few days or weeks can irritate skin.3

  • For dryness, hyaluronic acid helps hydrate skin and support the skin barrier, the outer layer that helps retain moisture.
  • For fine wrinkles, retinol is an option that stimulates collagen, the protein that helps support skin.
  • For daytime care, topical antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E or ferulic acid help limit damage from free radicals, molecules that can damage cells.
2

Choose a formula made for your skin type; sensitive skin is a reason to look for a product labeled for sensitive skin. A hypoallergenic label still leaves a risk of an allergic reaction. Effective products exist across price ranges, so a bigger skincare budget is not a requirement for a useful routine.3

Promises of looking ten years younger overnight are unrealistic. The phrase "clinically proven" does not mean a product received FDA approval, which is rather a lot of implied authority for two words on a jar.3

How to apply products to your neck

In the morning:

  1. 1Cleanse your face and neck.
  2. 2Apply a topical antioxidant if you use one.
  3. 3Apply moisturizer. Hyaluronic acid can be used morning and night.
  4. 4Finish with broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher on your neck, upper chest and other exposed skin.
2

Sun protection helps reduce premature aging, including sagging and wrinkles. A moisturizer containing sunscreen is an option if it offers broad spectrum protection and SPF 30 or higher. For time outdoors, choose water resistance too, and reapply sunscreen every two hours.34

In the evening, if you choose cosmetic retinol:

  1. 1Cleanse your face and neck.
  2. 2Start with a lower strength retinol every other night for a few weeks.
  3. 3Apply a nighttime moisturizer afterward.
  4. 4Consider increasing strength only if you have no irritation, burning or redness. Stop the retinol if those symptoms develop.

Is prescription tretinoin a better option?

Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives. Cosmetic products commonly contain retinol or retinaldehyde; prescription retinoids include tretinoin. These are not interchangeable names for one cream. Retinoid creams are generally less irritating than gels, and tretinoin can be particularly irritating. A prescription is a reason to follow the specific treatment instructions, not to copy a cosmetic retinol routine.5

If tretinoin is prescribed for your neck, use it exactly as directed. It is generally applied at bedtime in a thin layer to cleaned skin, allowed to dry as directed. Do not apply it to sunburned skin or areas affected by eczema. Using extra medication or applying it more often than prescribed is not part of the treatment.6

How long does improvement take?

Prescription tretinoin can take three to four months, or up to six months, to improve fine wrinkles. It reduces their appearance rather than removing them, and improvement can gradually disappear after stopping. Longer use, beyond six months, can improve several features of sun related aging, including fine wrinkling. Those timelines describe tretinoin, not every cream carrying the word "firming".56

Who should be careful with retinoids?

Topical retinoids can cause dryness, peeling, irritation and sun sensitivity, and can worsen eczema. Some are contraindicated during pregnancy. If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding, discuss a retinoid with your clinician before starting. If you become pregnant while using tretinoin, call your doctor.56

With prescription tretinoin, do not add other topical medicines, including benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid or hair removers, unless your doctor directs you. Alcohol rich products, menthol and fragranced shaving lotions can sting treated skin. Tell your prescriber about your other medicines and skin conditions before treatment.6

Contact your doctor if tretinoin causes severe or persistent dryness, burning, peeling, swelling or blistering. Call immediately for rash, hives, itching, or pain or discomfort at the treatment area.6

What if sagging is the main concern?

For actual lifting, discuss procedures with a board certified dermatologist rather than changing creams. Ultrasound typically gives modest lifting within two to six months after one treatment. Radiofrequency applied over the skin generally reaches its best results around six months. Radiofrequency delivered beneath the skin is also used on the neck, with results often appearing around one month.1

Procedures tend to work best for a small amount of sagging; extensive sagging can need a different approach. Less invasive treatments do not match surgical neck lift results. Pregnancy, a skin infection and certain medications rule out skin tightening procedures. The choice depends on the amount of sagging, medical suitability and acceptable downtime.1
