Which Olay Regenerist SPF cream are you buying?

Regenerist includes Micro Sculpting, Whip and Ultra Rich moisturisers, with SPF versions listed separately, because apparently a moisturiser also needs a family tree. In the US, Olay lists Micro Sculpting SPF 30 and Whip SPF 25. In the UK, the range includes Regenerist Day, Whip Day and Niacinamide creams with SPF 30, plus Day Cream refill and pump options.34

Choose the US Micro Sculpting version if SPF 30 is your requirement. US Whip offers a different texture: Olay describes a cream that turns to liquid on the skin and leaves a lightweight, matte finish. Olay lists Whip SPF 25 for oily, normal and dry skin. Its lighter feel is a texture choice, not a reason to treat SPF 25 as SPF 30.5

What is in the US SPF 30 cream?

Alongside its four sunscreen ingredients, the US cream contains glycerin, niacinamide, panthenol, dimethicone and the peptide palmitoyl pentapeptide 4. It also contains fragrance. If fragrance is an ingredient you avoid, this particular SPF 30 formula is not a fragrance free choice.1

What does broad spectrum SPF 30 actually mean?

SPF measures protection against sunburn and mainly indicates protection against UVB radiation. Broad spectrum means protection against both UVA and UVB radiation. SPF 30 does not mean 30 hours outdoors, even if the number looks helpfully like a booking duration. Sun exposure depends on the strength of the sun as well as how long you spend outside.6

Used as directed with other sun protection measures, the US cream helps reduce the risk of skin cancer and early skin ageing caused by the sun. Sunscreen is only part of that protection: cover exposed skin with clothing, wear a hat and sunglasses, and limit time in strong midday sun.16

How do you apply Olay Regenerist SPF 30?

1. 1Apply the US cream liberally 15 minutes before sun exposure.
2. 2Use enough to cover your face thoroughly. General sunscreen guidance gives at least 1 teaspoon for the face, approximately the amount covering the length of your index and middle fingers. Rub it in thoroughly.
3. 3Protect other exposed areas, including your neck, ears and hairline, with sunscreen too. Use an SPF 30 or higher lip balm for your lips.
4. 4Reapply at least every 2 hours. When outdoors, reapply immediately after swimming or sweating and use a water resistant sunscreen for those activities.

Treat the SPF cream as daytime skincare. For US Whip SPF 25, Olay's sequence is cleansing, then toners, serums or eye creams if used, followed by the SPF moisturiser. For UK Niacinamide SPF 30, Olay shows cleansing, serum, moisturiser and then eye cream. Follow the routine for your exact version rather than assuming every Regenerist product has identical directions.25

Can it be your only sunscreen?

The US SPF 30 cream has sunscreen directions, not just a decorative SPF claim. For swimming or sweating, its directions tell you to use a water resistant sunscreen. General sunscreen guidance favours SPF 30 or higher, broad spectrum coverage and water resistance. No sunscreen is waterproof; water resistant products specify protection for 40 or 80 minutes during swimming or sweating.167

Use sun protection when going outdoors even on cloudy days and in winter. UVA rays are present throughout the year, so the SPF cream is not exclusively a summer product.47

What results should you expect?

For the UK Regenerist Niacinamide SPF 30 cream, Olay describes immediate hydration lasting 24 hours and a lightweight feel with quick absorption. Olay reports that 93% of women experienced smooth skin after 1 day, with firmer skin and reduced appearance of fine lines after 14 days. Those timings belong to the UK Niacinamide product, not the US Micro Sculpting SPF 30 cream.2

The UK Niacinamide cream features niacinamide and vitamin E and has a fruity and floral fragrance. Its claim that 100% of women saw improvement in visible signs of ageing applies to use alongside Olay Retinol24 MAX night moisturiser, not the SPF cream alone. The niacinamide's stated 99% purity is not a 99% niacinamide concentration in the cream.2

When should you stop using it?

Do not apply the US cream to damaged or broken skin. Keep it out of your eyes and rinse with water if it gets in them. Stop use and ask a doctor if a rash occurs. Ask a doctor before using sunscreen on children under 6 months.1

How should you store it?

Keep sunscreen away from excessive heat and direct sunlight. Replace it after its expiry date; without an expiry date, replace it 3 years after purchase. If you cannot tell how old it is, discard it. Sunscreen needs protection from the sun too, an awkward qualification for the job.6

Does Olay Regenerist have SPF?

Some versions do. Olay sells original and fragrance free Regenerist moisturisers separately from SPF versions. Look for the SPF number on the exact product: the US Micro Sculpting sunscreen cream is SPF 30, while US Whip is SPF 25. UK Whip Day is listed as SPF 30, so even the Whip name does not settle the question.34
