Which is better for dry skin, petrolatum or lanolin?
Both are occlusives: ingredients that form a coating to reduce moisture loss rather than add water. Either can be useful in a cream or ointment for dry skin. Creams and ointments work better than lotions for dry skin, so the lightest bottle on the shelf does not win by default.13
| What matters | Petrolatum | Lanolin |
|---|---|---|
| Moisture protection | Helps hold existing moisture in the skin. | Helps hold existing moisture in the skin. |
| Texture | An occlusive with a thick, greasy feel. | An occlusive with a thick, greasy feel. |
| Allergy considerations | An alternative when avoiding lanolin; check the complete product ingredients. | Can cause contact allergy, particularly on compromised skin. |
| Chapped lips | White petroleum jelly is recommended for very dry, cracked lips. | Avoid lanolin in lip products while lips are chapped. |
Choose petrolatum if you have a known lanolin allergy. Lanolin remains an option for dry body skin if you tolerate it. The finished formula matters too: choose fragrance free products, and remember that "unscented" products can still contain ingredients that mask odors. A greasy ointment can suit very dry skin at home, where looking freshly varnished is not a scheduling problem. A cream can be more convenient for work or school.125
How should you apply either one?
- 1Wash with a gentle cleanser and warm water. Keep baths and showers to five to ten minutes, then gently pat dry.
- 2Wash your hands before applying moisturizer. Use a clean spoon or spatula for a tub rather than putting your fingers inside.
- 3Apply while skin is still damp, ideally within three minutes of bathing. Smooth a thin, shiny layer over dry areas in the direction of hair growth.
- 4Reapply after washing your hands and whenever skin feels dry. General emollient guidance suggests two to four applications daily.
If you use a prescription cream, follow your treatment plan for layering. Keep topical corticosteroids and emollients 30 minutes apart unless your treating team directs otherwise; applying them together can dilute the steroid treatment. Introduce only one new moisturizer at a time so a reaction is easier to trace.35
Is lanolin or petrolatum better for chapped skin?
For chapped lips, choose petrolatum rather than lanolin. Apply white petroleum jelly several times daily and before bed for very dry, cracked lips. Thick ointments seal in water longer than waxes or oils. Stop any lip product that burns, stings or tingles. With consistent lip care, noticeable improvement should occur within two to three weeks; see a dermatologist if it does not. For chapped hands or body skin, both ingredients can help retain moisture, but damaged skin calls for more caution with lanolin.234
Can lanolin cause skin irritation?
Yes. Lanolin can cause irritation or allergic contact dermatitis, an itchy skin reaction after contact with an allergen. Irritant reactions are more common than allergic reactions. Allergy can appear 48 to 72 hours after exposure, even after previous use without trouble. Watch for itching, redness, swelling or blistering where you applied the product. Stop the suspected product and seek medical advice. A dermatologist can investigate lanolin allergy with patch testing.25
With a confirmed lanolin allergy, check labels for lanolin and related names such as wool alcohols, wool fat, wool wax and anhydrous lanolin. If dry skin persists despite regular moisturizing, or moisturizers repeatedly burn or sting, see a dermatologist.12
Keep ointment residue away from flames
Both choices can leave residue on clothing and bedding that makes fabric ignite more easily and burn more intensely. Keep contaminated fabrics away from cigarettes, naked flames and heaters. Change and wash them regularly; washing reduces buildup but does not necessarily remove all residue. Switching to a product without paraffin does not remove this risk.6
