What is rosehip oil?

Rosehips are the fruit beneath a rose's petals, and their seeds are pressed to produce the oil. Rosehip oil and rosehip seed oil are names for the same oil, so the extra word is not an upgrade. The oil contains vitamins A, C and E, along with essential fatty acids.1

What are the benefits of rosehip oil for skin?

  • Moisture: Its fatty acids help keep skin hydrated.
  • Fine lines: It can help stimulate collagen and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Uneven tone: It can improve pigmentation.
  • Inflammation: It can help calm inflammation.

What are the benefits of rosehip oil for the face?

The same moisturizing benefits apply to the face. Rosehip oil is fairly lightweight and easily absorbed, and it can help improve inflammatory acne and acne scars. If your skin is oily, consider skipping it rather than adding more moisture.1

How do you use rosehip oil?

  1. 1Test a small amount on your forearm before applying rosehip oil across your face or body.
  2. 2Clean your skin and follow your bottle's directions about drying it. Guangzhou Yilong's rosehip oil label directs application to thoroughly dry skin.
  3. 3Gently apply the oil to the desired area. Pure rosehip oil can be applied directly to skin.
  4. 4Rosehip oil can be used once or twice daily.

Can you use it with a hydrating serum?

For a routine that includes hyaluronic acid, apply that serum to damp skin and follow immediately with a moisturizer containing an ingredient that traps moisture, such as petrolatum or mineral oil. Hyaluronic acid attracts and binds water. As general layering guidance, apply thinner products before thicker products; do not assume every facial oil replaces the moisturizer in this sequence.3

If you use a steroid cream or another treatment for a skin condition, general emollient guidance is to leave 20 to 30 minutes between the moisturizing product and the treatment. Ask your doctor which should go first. Separating them avoids diluting the treatment or spreading it onto areas that do not need it.4

What should you look for when buying it?

A dark amber bottle protects rosehip oil from UV light, so the packaging has a job beyond looking botanical. Unrefined or raw oil has a strong color that can transfer to skin and clothes.1

When should you stop using it?

Rosehip oil can cause an allergic reaction. Stop using it and ask a doctor if a rash occurs. Keep it out of your eyes, rinse with water after accidental eye contact, and do not apply it to damaged or broken skin. It is for external use only.12

Moisturizing treatments can also cause persistent burning or stinging, blocked or inflamed hair follicles, or facial rashes that aggravate acne. Speak to a doctor, nurse or pharmacist if these symptoms develop. If a dry skin condition is severe, seek care rather than relying on a facial oil alone.4
