Are there self tanners with no DHA?
Yes, if you mean products that make skin look tanned without sun exposure: temporary bronzers are the practical option. If you mean a tan that develops and stays through washing, DHA is the standard active ingredient and the only FDA approved sunless tanning agent in the United States. Temporary bronzers are makeup for a tanned appearance, even if the packaging would rather call it a holiday.23
| Question | Temporary bronzer without DHA | DHA self tanner |
|---|---|---|
| What creates the colour? | Cosmetic colour, similar to makeup. | DHA reacts with amino acids in the outer skin layer. |
| Does washing remove it? | Yes. The colour lasts until washing. | The developed tan is more resistant to soap, water and sweat. |
| What forms are available? | Tinted lotions, creams and powders. | Lotions, creams, mousses, gels and sprays. |
| Who should choose it? | Someone avoiding DHA who accepts temporary colour. | Someone who wants colour that develops and lasts beyond washing. |
What does DHA actually do?
DHA stands for dihydroxyacetone. It reacts with amino acids in the stratum corneum, the outer layer of dead skin cells, to form brown pigments called melanoidins. This creates a tanned appearance without ultraviolet exposure. A temporary bronzer instead supplies cosmetic colour; it does not need to create that DHA reaction.34
Is erythrulose an alternative?
Erythrulose is another additive used in sunless tanning formulations, including alongside DHA. Finding erythrulose on an ingredient list therefore does not tell you that DHA is absent. A developing tanner advertised around erythrulose still needs a full ingredient check. There is no verified standalone erythrulose product to name here, or a supported development time, strength or application schedule for one.5
How do you find a product without DHA?
Neither "bronzer" nor "sunless tanner" has a fixed FDA definition, so the product name is doing more branding than sorting.1
- 1Start with temporary bronzers, tinted moisturizers or powders rather than assuming every tanning product develops colour.
- 2Read the full ingredient declaration and look for dihydroxyacetone, the ingredient abbreviated as DHA.
- 3Confirm that the product is intended to provide temporary cosmetic colour. Some bronzers also contain DHA.
- 4For a salon treatment, ask for the ingredients before booking. In the United States, products used exclusively by professionals are not covered by the same retail ingredient declaration requirement.
What should you expect from the colour?
A temporary bronzer is for colour while the makeup remains on the skin, not a tan that keeps developing after removal. DHA colour develops over hours and lasts several days: pigmentation commonly begins around one hour after application, is strongest after 8 to 24 hours, and lasts three to ten days. Those timings describe DHA, not a bronzer without it. Use the bronzer's own directions for application, drying and removal rather than borrowing a DHA tanner's schedule.23
Does avoiding DHA prevent irritation?
Removing DHA does not remove every possible trigger. Fragrances and preservatives in tanning products can cause allergic contact dermatitis, an allergic skin rash. People with rosacea or eczema can also experience worsening symptoms from additives in self tanners. If you are avoiding DHA because a previous product caused a reaction, review the other ingredients too; DHA is not automatically the cause.123
DHA has not been widely studied in pregnancy or children and should be avoided in those groups. That does not make every alternative suitable: pregnancy suitability needs to be checked for the particular product, not inferred from the absence of DHA.2
Do you still need sunscreen?
Yes. Cosmetic colour is not sun protection. A bronzer or self tanner needs sunscreen ingredients and an SPF label to offer protection. Use a separate broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, which protects against both UVA and UVB. A separate sunscreen is preferable to relying on a combined tanning product, because tanning products are often applied too thinly for adequate sunscreen coverage. Reapply sunscreen after swimming, strenuous exercise, sweating or towelling off.13
