There is no single scent description that fits every self tanner. The tanning ingredient and the added scents both matter, so a scented formula and one without added perfume are different choices. If smell is your main concern, choose by scent rather than the promise of a darker tan, which answers a different question very confidently.1
Why do self tanners smell?
DHA stands for dihydroxyacetone, a sugar used in sunless tanning products. DHA reacts with amino acids in the stratum corneum, the outer layer of dead skin cells. This process, commonly called the Maillard reaction, forms brown pigments called melanoidins. Those pigments create the tanned appearance without needing ultraviolet exposure.34
The characteristic odour associated with DHA is a reason manufacturers add fragrance and essential oils. A perfumed self tanner therefore offers a scented formula, not necessarily an odourless one. Fragrance also changes the decision for sensitive skin: additives used to mask the smell can increase the risk of allergic contact dermatitis, an itchy skin reaction to an ingredient.1
Is there a self tanner with no smell?
A completely odourless self tanner is not a reliable expectation. Some formulas have an unpleasant odour, and removing added fragrance does not remove DHA. If you want to avoid perfume, check the ingredient list for fragrance or parfum and scented botanicals. If you have a known ingredient allergy, check for that ingredient too; avoiding perfume alone does not cover every possible allergen.12
A temporary bronzer is a different option if you want colour without a developing DHA tan. Bronzer lotions, creams and powders work like makeup and last only until washing, so the colour clocks out with the rest of the makeup. That makes bronzer a choice about temporary colour, not a promise of no smell.4
How should you apply self tanner?
- 1Exfoliate before application, especially over areas of thicker skin, then dry the skin thoroughly.
- 2Apply methodically in circular motions, working through one body area at a time.
- 3Dilute the tanner over joints to reduce uneven darkening, and wash your hands frequently to limit staining on the palms.
- 4Let the product dry thoroughly after application.
Colour develops over hours rather than appearing fully at application. Darkening generally starts within the first few hours and continues to develop afterwards. That colour timetable is not a timetable for the smell, so do not use the developing shade to decide when the odour should disappear. Continue using sun protection: a DHA tan does not protect against the sun.4
When is it more than an unpleasant smell?
An unpleasant scent and a skin reaction are separate problems. Stop using the product if you develop an itchy rash, redness, swelling, blisters or peeling. Seek medical assessment for a severe or persistent reaction; clinical patch testing can help identify a contact allergen. Take extra care with scented formulas if you have sensitive or eczema prone skin.15
