What does an oil cleanser do?

An oil cleanser helps remove oily residue, excess skin oil, waterproof makeup and sunscreen. In double cleansing, the oil cleanser comes first, followed by a water based cleanser that removes sweat and dirt. Double cleansing means two washes in one session, not your separate morning and evening washes.1

When should I use it?

Evening is the practical time for an oil cleansing step when you have makeup or sunscreen to remove. Always remove makeup before bed. General face washing guidance is to cleanse morning and night, and after heavy sweating; that does not mean using an oil cleanser at every wash. If one gentle cleanser removes everything thoroughly, leave the extra step out.123

How to use an oil cleanser

  1. 1Apply the oil cleanser to your palm, then gently massage it over your face with your fingertips to loosen makeup, oil and sunscreen.
  2. 2Rinse with lukewarm water, using your hands rather than a washcloth.
  3. 3For double cleansing, leave your face damp and gently apply a water based cleanser.
  4. 4Rinse again and pat dry with a soft towel. Apply moisturizer if your skin feels dry or itchy.

Who should be careful?

An oil cleanser can help remove excess oil, but acne prone skin can develop breakouts from oil cleansing, particularly when the oil cleanser is used alone. Too much washing can cause dryness, irritation and damage to the skin barrier, the skin's protective outer layer. Stop using a cleanser that irritates your skin rather than trying to push through.12

For any daily cleanser, choose a gentle formula without abrasive particles or alcohol. Dry skin does better with a hydrating cleanser. Keep your technique gentle too: fingertips are enough, and scrubbing irritates skin. Hot water is not necessary; use lukewarm water for washing and rinsing. If eczema, rosacea or another skin condition affects your quality of life, see a dermatologist.23

Can I remove makeup without an oil cleanser?

Its cleansing molecules attract and lift away residue without stripping away much of the skin's natural oils, making it an option for dry or sensitive skin. Apply a small amount with your hands or a cotton pad and gently pass it over your face. Follow with a gentle cleanser when removing sunscreen or cosmetics. Heavy or waterproof makeup can need an additional oil or water based cleanser.4
