What is a simple skin care routine order?
Start with a gentle cleanser, a moisturizer suited to your skin, and daily sunscreen. Choose a cleanser without microbeads, which can cause irritation and inflammation. A basic routine needs only those essentials, not a shopping list with its own table of contents. Extra products should address a specific need rather than make the routine longer.2
What order should you use skin care products in?
Your morning routine
- 1Cleanse gently. Use warm water and your fingertips, rinse thoroughly, and pat rather than rub your face dry. If your skin is dry or sensitive, a morning rinse with water can replace cleanser.
- 2Apply an antioxidant serum if you want one. Vitamin C belongs after cleansing and before moisturizer. Antioxidants help protect against free radicals, substances that can damage cells.
- 3Apply moisturizer. For the basic routine without a serum, apply moisturizer while your skin is still slightly damp to help retain water.
- 4Finish with sunscreen. Use SPF 30 or higher every day, including winter. Choose SPF 50 or higher for planned time in the sun, such as a beach day.
For oily skin, a moisturizer containing broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher can combine moisturizing and sun protection. Broad spectrum means protection against both types of ultraviolet rays. Do not assume makeup containing SPF is enough for your sun protection. Outdoors, add shade and protective clothing, such as a wide brimmed hat.24
Your evening routine
- 1Remove makeup if you wear it. Start with a cleansing balm, an oil based cleanser, or micellar water, then follow with a gentle cleanser.
- 2Cleanse your face. Without makeup, a single gentle cleanse is enough; double cleansing adds unnecessary complexity and can be more drying. Washing in the shower counts, so you do not need another wash at the sink.
- 3Apply moisturizer after cleansing. Pat your face dry rather than rubbing, and choose a texture suited to your skin.
How often should you cleanse?
Most people should wash morning and night, with cleansing after sweating when needed. If you wash only once daily, make it the evening wash. More washing is not automatically better: every cleanse removes some natural oil, and overwashing can leave skin drier. There is no universal rule requiring exactly 60 seconds of washing. The right washing time depends on your cleanser, skin type, and activity.34
Face wipes are a fallback when you cannot reach a sink, not a replacement for regular cleansing. Their preservatives and the rubbing needed to remove makeup can be harsh on skin. For young people with greasy skin, frequent washing can irritate skin and worsen symptoms; use a mild cleanser rather than repeatedly washing to remove every trace of oil.35
What is the skin care routine order for combination skin?
Combination skin uses the same order; change the products, not the sequence. The center of the face can be oily while the cheeks are dry. A gentle foaming cleanser is an option, and a lighter lotion suits normal or combination skin. Most people with combination skin can cleanse twice daily. If washing leaves skin dry or irritated, switch to a gentler cleanser or use a thicker moisturizer afterward.135
Choose products for your skin type
- Dry or sensitive skin: consider a cream based cleanser and a more hydrating moisturizer. Dry to very dry skin can suit a greasier moisturizer.
- Oily skin: choose a mild foaming cleanser and keep moisturizing after washing. A harsh cleanser can irritate skin and trigger increased oil production.
- Skin prone to blocked pores: look for products labeled noncomedogenic, meaning designed not to block pores. Gel based moisturizers are an option for oily or acne prone skin.
- Skin sensitive to fragrance: choose fragrance free products. Unscented products can still contain a fragrance that masks other smells.
For oily skin, avoid alcohol based cleansers and choose oil free, water based makeup. Remove makeup before bed. During the day, blotting papers can absorb excess oil: press gently, leave the paper against your face for a few seconds, and avoid rubbing. Touch your face with clean hands when applying products rather than repeatedly touching it throughout the day.4
Where do retinol, exfoliants, and masks fit?
Retinol is a nighttime addition for fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, and uneven pigmentation. It helps build collagen, a protein that supports skin structure, and increases sun sensitivity. Salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and lactic acid can help reduce oiliness, but can be too harsh. Reduce use or stop the product if irritation develops.14
Masks can boost hydration and support the skin barrier, but do not replace daily cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection. For a mask that washes off, apply moisturizer after removing it. Follow the mask's label for how long to leave it on and how often to use it; extra time can cause irritation.6
Test a new mask on small areas first. Avoid duplicating exfoliating ingredients already in your routine, especially alongside retinol or acid products. Fragrance, essential oils, rubbing alcohol, and rough exfoliants such as walnut shells can irritate skin. Strong exfoliating masks need particular caution on sensitive skin. Wash a mask off immediately if you feel itching, burning, or stinging, and see a dermatologist if your skin feels worse afterward.6
What if the routine does not fix your skin concern?
Moisturizer helps keep water in your skin; routine order is not itself a treatment for persistent acne. Acne involves blocked hair follicles and oil glands, not dirty skin. A pharmacist can advise on a few blackheads, whiteheads, or spots. See a doctor for widespread or painful acne, cysts, or acne that has not improved with pharmacy treatments. Facial masks cannot replace treatment for acne or eczema.56
