Here, "original" means the Water Fit Sun Serum SPF50+ PA++++ sold on Skin1004's international product page; "UV" means the US formula with a Drug Facts label. Both carry almost the same Water Fit Sun Serum name, which gives the packaging a smaller workload than the shopper.23
What actually changed?
| Detail | Original formula | US UV formula |
|---|---|---|
| Protection label | SPF50+ PA++++ | Broad spectrum SPF50 |
| Sunscreen filters | Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate; Ethylhexyl Triazone; Methylene Bis Benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol; Diethylhexyl Butamido Triazone | Avobenzone 2.7%; Homosalate 13.6%; Octisalate 4.5%; Octocrylene 9% |
| Supporting ingredients | Niacinamide, centella, glycerin and several forms of hyaluronic acid | Panthenol, centella, glycerin and several forms of hyaluronic acid; niacinamide is not listed |
| Brand described finish | Lightweight, nonsticky and dewy, without a white cast | Light and watery, quickly absorbed and nongreasy, without a white cast |
| Application order | Last step of basic skincare | Last step of basic skincare |
| Listed standalone price | $27 regular; $21.60 sale | $19 regular; $17.10 sale for 50 ml |
The UV listing has the lower advertised price, but the original page offers several sizes, so compare the selected size before deciding which is better value. Sale prices are not a fixed price comparison.2
Do not read SPF50 versus SPF50+ as proof that the UV formula is an upgrade. SPF primarily describes protection against UVB, the rays responsible for sunburn; broad spectrum means protection against both UVA and UVB. US sunscreens are regulated as drugs, and products sold elsewhere can have different formulas and labeling.4
Which version should you choose?
Choose the original if you specifically want its filter combination, niacinamide or familiar dewy finish. Choose UV if you want the US labeled formula and its panthenol containing base. Skin1004 markets the original for sensitive, normal and dry skin, and describes the UV routine for normal, dry and combination skin. Those descriptions do not tell you which formula your skin will tolerate better.12
Both are described as lightweight, hydrating sunscreens without a white cast, so the word "serum" is doing cosmetic work rather than changing sunscreen's job. If you are replacing a bottle you already like, check the ingredients on the new packaging: Skin1004 updates its ingredient lists, and the package carries the most recent version.12
How do you apply either version?
- 1Finish your morning skincare first. Let moisturizer settle rather than applying sunscreen over a wet, slippery layer.
- 2Apply sunscreen evenly to exposed skin, including the face, neck and ears. The UV label says to apply liberally 15 minutes before sun exposure; the same timing is general sunscreen guidance for the original.
- 3Let the sunscreen settle before primer or foundation. There is no universal waiting time: wait until the film is no longer wet or mobile, then press makeup on rather than rubbing.
- 4Reapply at least every two hours outdoors and after swimming or sweating. For swimming or heavy sweating, choose a sunscreen whose package specifies water resistance.
The UV formula has hydration testing showing an immediate increase in surface moisture and a modest deeper moisture increase after two weeks. That does not make it a guaranteed smoother makeup base. Pilling can come from overlapping layers, rubbing or films that have not settled; remove one optional skincare layer before reducing the sunscreen amount.5
When should you stop using UV?
Do not apply the UV formula to damaged or broken skin. Keep it out of your eyes and rinse with water if it gets in. Stop using it and ask a doctor if a rash occurs. For children under six months, ask a doctor before applying sunscreen. Use shade and protective clothing alongside sunscreen, especially between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.346
