What should you check on the tube?

SPF measures protection against UVB, the ultraviolet rays responsible for sunburn. Broad spectrum means protection against both UVA and UVB. Look for both the SPF number and the words "broad spectrum" rather than treating one as shorthand for the other.23

How do you use Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen?

These are general sunscreen application steps. Follow your tube's directions for any product specific instructions.

  1. 1Apply sunscreen before going outdoors. General dermatology guidance advises allowing approximately 15 minutes before sun exposure.
  2. 2Use enough to cover exposed skin thoroughly. General face application guidance is at least 1 teaspoon; do not reduce the amount to a small dab.
  3. 3Cover your face, neck and ears, and protect other skin left uncovered by clothing. Use an SPF 30 or higher lip balm for your lips.
  4. 4Reapply every two hours while outdoors. Cover the same exposed areas again, using a full application rather than a token touch up.
  5. 5Reapply after swimming, sweating or towel drying. Follow the water resistance and reapplication instructions on your tube.

How does Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen SPF 50 perform?

SPF 50 is above the SPF 30 minimum recommended for outdoor use, but the amount you apply matters. Applying sunscreen too thinly reduces protection. A higher SPF provides more UVB protection while the sunscreen is on your skin; it does not extend the reapplication interval or justify staying in the sun longer.134

For swimming or sweaty activity, check whether your exact Unseen tube is labelled water resistant. A water resistance claim of 40 or 80 minutes describes how long the labelled protection lasts during swimming or sweating. No sunscreen is waterproof. Water, sweat and towel drying can remove sunscreen, so do not wait for the usual two hour interval after those activities.24

Is it the same as Glowscreen?

Glowscreen SPF 40 is a different Supergoop product: a tinted, lightweight lotion with a glowy finish that also works as a makeup primer. Glowscreen's luminous finish is deliberately visible, so it has taken a rather different approach to discretion. Choose Glowscreen if those are the features you want; use Unseen's own directions to decide how to layer it with makeup.5

Do you need it on cloudy days?

Use sunscreen for outdoor exposure throughout the year, including cloudy days and winter. People of every skin colour can experience sun damage. Sunscreen does not completely block ultraviolet radiation, so combine it with shade, clothing, a hat and sunglasses. Do not use SPF 50 as permission to spend longer in direct sun.1234

Who needs extra care?

If you take medication, ask your healthcare professional whether it increases sun sensitivity and changes the precautions you need. Keep babies younger than 6 months out of direct sunlight and ask a healthcare professional before applying sunscreen to them. If sunburn causes severe swelling, blisters or feeling unwell, seek medical help.24

When should you replace it?

Check the expiry date before use. If no expiration date is printed, discard sunscreen three years after purchase. An old tube is not a reliable substitute for a fresh application.24
