What is in The INKEY List retinal?

The US and UK Advanced 0.2% Retinal Serum listings show the same ingredient list and retinal concentration. Retinal, also called retinaldehyde, belongs to the retinoid family of vitamin A ingredients. The formula contains 0.2% encapsulated retinal, 2% Sirtalice marine ferment and the soothing ingredient SymSitive 1609. Glycerin, mango seed butter and cucumber extract also appear in the ingredient list. The serum is described as lightweight, hydrating and fast absorbing.12

Should you choose retinal or retinol?

Advanced Retinal is the stronger option in this comparison. Retinal needs one conversion step in skin to become retinoic acid, its active form, while retinol needs more conversion. Choose Advanced Retinal if you already tolerate retinoids and want to address more pronounced wrinkles, uneven tone or firmness. For a first retinoid, The INKEY List directs beginners toward Starter Retinol instead. Retinol is the gentler choice for sensitive skin; moving straight to an advanced formula is not necessary to begin addressing fine lines.2

The EU Retinol Serum is a separate product from Starter Retinol. Its 1% retinyl acetate and Advanced Retinal's 0.2% retinal are different ingredients, so the larger percentage is not a shortcut to choosing the stronger serum. Prices above are local listings in different currencies, not a direct price ranking. The bottle holds 15 ml, so the word Advanced does not refer to its capacity.3

How do you apply it?

How often should you use it?

The standalone serum directions start at two to three nights per week, increasing as tolerance builds. The INKEY List's retinal routine gives a more cautious starting point: once every five to seven days, then gradually increasing to two to three times weekly. Use that slower introduction if sensitivity is a concern. The standalone US directions allow eventual use every evening, but increasing frequency depends on tolerance, not simply finishing the first week.14

What should go before and after retinal?

Hydration comes before Advanced Retinal, and moisturizer comes after it. The brand's retinal set follows the same order: cleanser, hydrating serum, retinal, eye cream and moisturizer, with sunscreen finishing the morning routine. Retinal stays in the evening even though other products in the set can be used morning and evening. The five product set is a bundle, not an entrance exam for using retinal. The standalone directions let you use your preferred moisturizer rather than requiring the entire set.14

How long does it take to see results?

Visible reduction in deep wrinkles was reported after one week in a clinical study of 26 participants conducted over eight weeks. In a separate eight week consumer trial of 105 participants, more than 80% reported more radiant, rejuvenated and even looking skin at two weeks, and 85% reported firmer, more lifted skin at four weeks. These are different outcomes measured at different points, not a single deadline for every concern. Give wrinkle appearance, tone and firmness separate attention rather than expecting them all to change together.5

Who should be careful?

Retinoids are not a good starting point for skin with substantial dryness, skin allergies, redness or inflammation. If those describe your skin, ask a dermatologist about a suitable approach before choosing this strong formula. Retinoids can worsen eczema through their drying effect. In darker skin, irritation can trigger hyperpigmentation, meaning dark marks, so a slow introduction and moisturizer matter particularly. A product being listed for all skin types does not remove those precautions.67

Do not use retinoids during pregnancy. Retinoids can also make skin more sensitive to sunlight: use them at night and protect exposed skin during the day with sunscreen, shade and protective clothing. If sensitive skin makes sunscreen selection difficult, a physical sunscreen containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide is an option.6

What should make you pause?

General retinoid side effects include redness, peeling, dry skin and irritant dermatitis, which is skin inflammation caused by irritation. Allergic contact dermatitis is less common. Avoid applying retinal close to your eyes or lips, where retinoids can be irritating. If irritation develops, pause increases in frequency rather than escalating through it. Significant redness or inflammation warrants a dermatologist's advice before continuing.67

If acne is your main concern, do not treat this cosmetic retinal serum as interchangeable with an acne medicine. Prescription retinoids and adapalene have specific acne uses. Moderate or severe acne scarring, or acne associated with hormonal changes, deserves a dermatologist's assessment before trying a retinoid.6

How should you store it?

Store Advanced Retinal in a cool, dry place at 15 to 25 degrees Celsius, away from direct sunlight. Keep it out of children's reach. The serum is for external use only.5
