What changes should you expect?

Retinol increases skin cell production, helps prevent clogged pores and increases collagen production. With regular use, skin can look smoother, more even in tone and less lined. Retinol targets visible signs of aging, but creams and serums cannot reduce all of them, despite the workload implied by the words "age support".23

Early changes are not always retinol results: moisturizer alone can make fine lines look plumper within days. Retinol takes longer. Pimples can continue during the first couple of months, and acne can initially look worse. Dark spots sometimes lighten over months; wrinkles usually need several months before a noticeable difference. Deep, sunken or raised acne scars are not reliably improved by topical retinol.23

Which The Ordinary retinol should you start with?

Retinol 0.2% in Squalane is The Ordinary's low strength option for early signs of aging, in an oil format. The brand positions Retinol 1% in Squalane for intermediate users. Start with the lower strength if you are new to retinol. Retinal and Granactive Retinoid are different forms of retinoid, so their percentages are not interchangeable measures of retinol strength.1

How to use it

  1. 1Patch test before applying retinol to your face, and follow the product's directions.
  2. 2At night, cleanse gently and pat skin dry. Apply any water based serums before The Ordinary retinol.
  3. 3Apply retinol as directed, keeping it away from your eyes, mouth and nose. Finish with moisturizer.
  4. 4Begin a couple of nights a week. Increase frequency gradually as your skin adjusts, rather than starting every night.
  5. 5Use sunscreen during the day, seek shade and cover exposed skin with clothing.

Do not layer The Ordinary retinol with other retinoids. Use direct acids, copper peptides and direct vitamin C on alternate days or evenings instead. Introduce one active product before adding another. Continued use helps maintain results, so the "after" is not a retirement announcement for the bottle.13

When should you stop or get advice?

Dryness, redness and peeling can occur. Stop a cosmetic retinol product that stings, burns or tingles rather than treating irritation as proof it is working. Sensitive, very dry or inflamed skin needs particular care; irritation can also trigger dark marks in darker skin. Do not use retinoids during pregnancy, and ask your doctor about use while breastfeeding. See a dermatologist for substantial acne scarring, marked redness or inflammation, or results that remain disappointing after sustained use. If you already use a prescription retinoid, do not add The Ordinary retinol.134
