Which should you choose?

Squalane is the more straightforward choice when moisture retention and a light feel are your priorities. Squalane sits at the skin's surface and helps reduce water loss. The ingredient is noncomedogenic, meaning it does not clog pores, making it an option for oily or acne prone skin. That is ingredient guidance, not a promise of breakout free use. The Ordinary positions rose hip oil for dryness, dullness and signs of aging, and lists it as suitable for all skin types. Its unrefined oil has a natural smell, partly from its omega fatty acids; that smell alone does not mean the oil is rancid. Choose by your main aim rather than the longer name, because extra words do not constitute a skincare routine.12

How do you use them?

  1. 1Patch test before starting rose hip oil. Apply a small amount to clean forearm skin, keep the area dry and rinse after 24 hours. Stop if redness, burning, itching, blisters or irritation develop.
  2. 2Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and gently pat dry.
  3. 3Apply prescribed topical medication or treatment after cleansing. Apply lighter serums or toners before squalane.
  4. 4Use rose hip oil as directed: a few drops once daily, preferably before bed, on intact skin. For squalane, follow your bottle's amount and frequency.
  5. 5Include moisturizer and daytime sunscreen in your routine. For dry skin, use a broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.

Keep the routine short, because a bathroom shelf is not a to do list. Adding more products can irritate skin, particularly when several target signs of aging. Squalane can be used with retinol, but squalane itself contains no retinol. An oil is not a reason to add another treatment.13

What should you expect?

Think moisture support first, rather than choosing either oil as a dedicated wrinkle treatment. Rose hip oil is intended to leave skin softer and more luminous; squalane helps retain hydration. There is no established comparison here showing which delivers faster visible results, or a dependable week by week timetable. If your skin remains very dry, use a fragrance free cream or ointment rather than relying on an oil alone. Apply moisturizer while skin is still damp and whenever it feels dry.24

Who should be careful?

If you have eczema, rose hip oil is not the default choice: plant oils can irritate eczema, and botanical ingredients can trigger allergic contact dermatitis, an itchy reaction to something touching the skin. Squalane is a possible option, but check the whole formula for ingredients that trigger your skin. If rose hip oil causes irritation, rinse it off, stop using it and consult a doctor. See a dermatologist if dryness persists despite moisturizing, or if products cause burning, stinging or irritation.1245
