Does tinted sunscreen protect better than untinted sunscreen?

Tinted sunscreen adds a type of protection that SPF alone does not describe. SPF measures protection against UVB, the rays mainly responsible for sunburn. Broad spectrum protection also covers UVA, which contributes to skin ageing and skin cancer. In the US, a sunscreen must pass broad spectrum testing to carry that claim on its label.35

Visible light is the light your eyes can see, including light from the sun. Pigments such as iron oxides help reflect it away from skin. Untinted broad spectrum sunscreen is designed for UV protection rather than visible light protection. If pigmentation is not your concern, added colour is not a reason to abandon an untinted sunscreen that meets the UV protection requirements.2

Is tinted sunscreen better for dark spots?

Yes, particularly for melasma and pigmentation worsened by visible light. Melasma causes darker patches when pigment producing cells become more active. Visible light can worsen melasma, especially in darker skin tones, and can aggravate dark marks left after inflammation. Tinted sunscreens have reduced melasma relapses more than untinted broad spectrum sunscreens. Check the ingredient list for iron oxides rather than choosing by the word "tinted" alone.12

A tint can even out the appearance of skin immediately, without promoting sunscreen to a full makeup department. Fading existing pigmentation is a separate process: sun protection can help fade dark spots, while melasma treatments take time. Sunscreen belongs alongside a melasma treatment plan, not in place of one. Daily sunscreen also helps protect against premature ageing and sun induced dark spots.1267

Does tinted sunscreen leave less white cast?

Tinted mineral sunscreen is less likely to leave a white cast than an untinted mineral formula containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Its coloured base helps replace the white appearance with a skin tone shade, which is a more useful ambition than making sunscreen visibly announce itself. Shade matching still matters: choose a colour that blends into your skin. Give the formula a few minutes to settle before judging the finish. A tint alone does not tell you how light, rich or comfortable a particular formula will feel.24

How should you use either type?

  1. 1Choose broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. For melasma, choose a tinted formula containing iron oxides.
  2. 2Apply sunscreen to all skin not covered by clothing, 15 minutes before going outside. For melasma, protect your skin every day, including cloudy days.
  3. 3Reapply at least every two hours outdoors, and after swimming or heavy sweating.
  4. 4Use shade and protective clothing as well, including a hat that shades your face and neck. Neither type of sunscreen blocks all UV radiation.

What if your skin is sensitive?

For melasma, choose gentle, fragrance free skin care. Stop using a product that burns or stings: irritation can darken existing spots. Mineral sunscreens can be an option for sensitive skin, but choose by the complete formula rather than its colour. If melasma persists, see a dermatologist about treatment options.14
