What should you look for in a toner?
Start with the dry areas, not just the oily ones. Combination skin is dry in some places and oily in others, often across the forehead, nose and chin, known as the T zone. A product aimed only at removing oil can be the wrong fit for the rest of your face. Use general dry skin guidance when choosing a toner for those areas: avoid alcohol, fragrance and alpha hydroxy acids if dryness is the problem you are trying to solve.3
| Type of toner | What matters for combination skin | When to choose or skip it |
|---|---|---|
| Gentle, hydrating toner | Fits a routine focused on adding moisture without stripping natural oils. | Consider it if you want an extra hydration step and it does not leave skin tight or dry. |
| Harsh astringent toner | Can dry and irritate skin. | Skip it if you have dry areas or are treating acne. |
| Exfoliating acid toner | Adds exfoliation rather than simply hydration. | Do not use it to deal with dry, peeling areas; moisturize those areas instead. |
What can a toner actually do?
A hydrating toner belongs in a routine that replenishes moisture rather than stripping away natural oil. Judge the fit by how your skin feels after use: tightness and dryness are reasons to choose something else. Do not treat a toner as a substitute for moisturizing dry areas. Moisturizer adds moisture and helps prevent water from leaving the skin. The bottle marked "toner" does not get promoted to moisturizer just because it occupies the next space on the shelf.13
Where does toner go in your routine?
- 1Cleanse gently. Avoid harsh, excessively drying or fragranced cleansers.
- 2Apply your hydrating toner after cleansing. It can fit into a morning or evening routine.
- 3Apply a serum or essence if you already use one. Adding several new products together makes it harder to identify what helps or irritates.
- 4Moisturize the dry areas. Combination skin does not require identical moisturizing across every part of the face.
- 5Finish your morning routine with broad spectrum sunscreen rated SPF 30 or higher.
Introduce new products slowly rather than rebuilding the whole routine at once.1
Do you need more cleansing before toner?
Usually, one thorough wash with a gentle cleanser is enough. Double cleansing can help remove waterproof makeup or waterproof sunscreen, but it is not necessary for most people. Overwashing can cause dryness, irritation and damage to the skin barrier, the protective outer layer of skin. If your face already feels dry after washing, reconsider the cleanser or extra cleansing before adding another product. Washing twice is not automatically twice as useful, despite the appealing arithmetic.4
What if combination skin also has acne?
During acne treatment, choose gentle products labelled "alcohol free" and avoid irritating astringents, toners and exfoliants. Drying the skin can make acne appear worse. Wash gently up to twice daily and after sweating, using your fingertips rather than scrubbing tools. Give your acne treatment time rather than repeatedly changing products: improvement can take several weeks to a few months. That is an acne treatment timeline, not a promise about toner. If breakouts continue despite these changes, see a dermatologist.2
What if your skin is sensitive or starts stinging?
Patch test a new product on your inner arm before putting it on your face, particularly if your skin is sensitive. Fragrance and preservatives can cause reactions, and people with acne, rosacea or eczema need to choose products carefully. For dry, peeling areas, moisturize rather than exfoliate. See a dermatologist if dryness does not improve or becomes painful, cracked, bleeding, stinging or very irritating.13
