Here, Aquaphor means the US Healing Ointment containing 41% petrolatum; urea cream is a category with different strengths and formulas, not one fixed product.12
What is the difference?
| Feature | Urea cream | Aquaphor Healing Ointment |
|---|---|---|
| Main action | Draws and retains water; softens surface scale | Forms a protective barrier to reduce water loss |
| Strength | Urea preparations range from 3% to 40%; 10% cream is a common option | 41% petrolatum |
| Other ingredients | Depend on the cream; some formulas include medicines | Mineral oil, ceresin, lanolin alcohol, panthenol, glycerin and bisabolol |
| Texture | Creams are lighter and absorb faster than ointments | Greasy ointment with a longer lasting protective effect |
| Best fit | Intact dry skin with roughness or scale | Dry areas needing protection; chapped skin and lips, and minor cuts or scrapes |
| Directions | Follow the exact cream's directions | Apply as needed |
Urea is naturally present in healthy skin and helps hold water in its outer layer. Applied urea also softens that layer so excess scale releases more easily. Choose the strength for the problem being treated, rather than assuming stronger is better. Higher strength preparations and creams containing corticosteroids can require a prescription.1
Creams suit broad application and absorb faster than ointments, so the moisturizer does not have to remain the most noticeable thing you are wearing. An ointment makes more sense when a lasting protective layer matters more than a light finish.3
How should you apply them?
- 1Check the area first. Keep urea off broken, infected or oozing skin and areas with severe widespread redness.
- 2Apply your chosen moisturizer immediately after bathing to help retain water in the skin.
- 3Follow the urea cream's own directions. Aquaphor tells you to apply its Healing Ointment as needed.
- 4Reapply to match the dryness. General moisturizer guidance allows application at other times, with regular use two to three times daily sometimes needed. Mild dryness can need only a light moisturizer at night.
Do you need both?
Not necessarily. Moisturizers often combine water attracting ingredients with ingredients that limit evaporation. Aquaphor already contains glycerin alongside petrolatum. Combining complementary moisturizing ingredients can benefit dry skin associated with eczema, but that does not make two separate products essential.24
What results should you expect?
The practical goals are softer skin, less dryness and better moisture retention. Ongoing moisturizing matters because dryness can return when treatment stops. There is no single healing deadline for every urea cream or every cause of dryness.4
In a small trial of 26 adults with mild to moderate chronic hand eczema, Aquaphor improved eczema severity and moisture measures after 28 days of twice daily use. The other treatment was 10% urea cream containing 0.1% triamcinolone, a corticosteroid medicine, so plain urea cream cannot be ranked against Aquaphor from that comparison. Moisturizer alone is not always enough to control hand eczema.5
Who should be careful?
Urea can cause stinging, itching or a rash. Seek medical advice if symptoms persist or become bothersome. Urea also increases penetration of substances such as corticosteroids, so follow your treatment plan when using prescription creams.1
Occlusive moisturizers can aggravate acne or inflamed hair follicles. Stop a moisturizer if an allergic skin reaction develops. Aquaphor contains lanolin alcohol, so avoid it if you have a known allergy to that ingredient.23
Keep both products out of the eyes. Do not use Aquaphor on deep wounds, puncture wounds, animal bites or serious burns. Stop Aquaphor and ask a doctor if the condition worsens, symptoms last more than seven days, or symptoms clear and return within a few days. Excessively dry skin can need treatment for an underlying condition, not just a different moisturizer.26
