What makes micellar water different from plain water?

Micellar water contains surfactants, which are cleansing agents. These molecules have a part that mixes with water and a part that attracts oily material. They gather into tiny clusters called micelles, helping lift away grime that water alone cannot fully remove. The clear appearance does not mean the bottle contains only water.2

What can you use micellar water for?

  • Daily facial cleansing: Remove dirt and excess oil, including on days when you wear no makeup.
  • Makeup removal: Take off most makeup before continuing your evening routine.
  • A first cleanse: Use micellar water before a gentle face wash when removing sunscreen or cosmetic products.
  • Gentler cleansing: Consider micellar water if your skin tends to feel dry or sensitive after cleansing.

Bioderma Sensibio H2O also removes pollution particles and pollen from the skin, so makeup does not have exclusive rights to the cotton pad. Its cleansing uses include a bare face as well as a made up one.23

Check your bottle for any extra directions. CeraVe tells you to shake its Hydrating Micellar Water well and saturate a cotton pad. Bioderma tells you to soak a reusable cotton pad with Sensibio H2O, then cleanse the face and eyes.34

Can you use micellar water around your eyes?

Choose a formula whose directions include eye makeup removal. For CeraVe Hydrating Micellar Water, hold a saturated cotton pad over a closed eye for a few seconds, then gently wipe away the makeup. CeraVe describes this product as ophthalmologist tested and suitable for contact lens wearers. Bioderma Sensibio H2O also includes the eyes and eyelids in its application areas.34

Do you need to rinse it or use face wash afterwards?

Many micellar waters can replace face wash, depending on your skin needs and the product's directions. CeraVe Hydrating Micellar Water and Bioderma Sensibio H2O are both designed to stay on without rinsing. Bioderma describes its finish as neither greasy nor sticky. A no rinse cleanser removes a trip to the sink, not every other job in your routine.34

Heavy or waterproof makeup can need an additional cleanser or dedicated makeup remover. CeraVe describes its Hydrating Micellar Water as effective on longwear makeup, but that is not a reason to keep rubbing at makeup that remains.14

Can you use micellar water every day?

Micellar water can be used in the morning, evening or both. CeraVe includes morning and evening use in its directions; Bioderma Sensibio H2O specifies morning and/or evening. Treat micellar water as the cleansing step rather than adding it after your face is already clean.34

Which formula should you choose?

For dry or sensitive skin, look for a gentle formula intended for those needs. CeraVe Hydrating Micellar Water is fragrance free and contains ceramides and niacinamide; the brand makes it for all skin types, including dry, oily and sensitive skin. Bioderma Sensibio H2O is unfragranced and designed for sensitive skin. Keep moisturizer in the routine even when the cleanser is described as hydrating.4

Bioderma distinguishes Sensibio for sensitive skin, Sebium for acne prone skin and Hydrabio for dehydrated skin. Those are separate formulas, not interchangeable names for one bottle. Check the package ingredient list before choosing, because both Bioderma and CeraVe note that packaging can reflect formula updates.345

Is micellar water a toner or a treatment?

Micellar water is a cleanser, not a toner. Toners are used after cleansing and often focus on hydration or targeted ingredients. Micellar water removes makeup and everyday grime; it is not a liquid promotion to the entire skincare department. It does not treat acne or erase wrinkles. Removing excess oil and impurities may help reduce clogged pores, but cleansing does not replace acne treatment.1
