Is Vanicream a good face moisturizer?

Yes, particularly for a dry face. Vanicream describes Moisturizing Cream as easy to spread, quickly absorbed and noncomedogenic, meaning formulated not to clog pores. That does not mean you should ignore a reaction. The cream is intended for face, hands, feet and body, so the bathroom does not need a separate tub for every postcode.12

The cream contains petrolatum, sorbitol, cetearyl alcohol and propylene glycol, among its 11 ingredients. It has no ceramides, botanical extracts or essential oils, and is free of fragrance and masking fragrances. Fragrance free does not mean completely odorless: the ingredients can have their own smell.1

What moisturizer should you use for sensitive skin?

Choose Moisturizing Cream for dry skin and a product you can also use on the body. It carries the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance. For a lighter facial option, Vanicream offers Moisturizing Lotion, Daily Facial Moisturizer and Facial Moisturizer SPF 30. Daily Facial Moisturizer contains ceramides; Moisturizing Cream does not.1

If you have eczema, a fragrance free cream or ointment is generally preferable to a lotion. Moisturizing helps maintain a barrier between your skin and outside irritants. Fragrance can trigger eczema flares, and "unscented" is not an equivalent label: an unscented product can contain fragrance whose smell has been covered up. Other ingredients can also trigger a flare, so choosing a fragrance free product is only part of the decision.3

What is sensitive skin?

Sensitive skin describes reduced tolerance to cosmetics and personal care products, rather than one medical diagnosis. Symptoms include stinging, itching or burning, with or without visible redness, dryness, peeling or bumps. A face can react to a product that causes no trouble elsewhere; eyelids are particularly sensitive. Tolerating a moisturizer on your hands therefore does not settle whether your face will tolerate it.4

Dryness, eczema, rosacea and contact dermatitis can all cause sensitivity. Contact dermatitis means skin inflammation caused by contact with something; an irritant reaction is not necessarily an allergy. Several mild irritants can add up, including repeated washing, friction and environmental exposure. With eczema, a disturbed skin barrier lets outside factors penetrate more easily. A moisturizer addresses dryness, but identifying the cause matters when reactions keep returning.4

How to start using Vanicream

  1. 1Test the new moisturizer first. For eczema prone skin, apply a quarter sized amount to the inside of your arm daily for 7 to 10 days. If the skin stays clear, start using the product.
  2. 2Wash with warm water. If you have eczema, keep baths or showers to 5 to 10 minutes; longer washing can dry the skin.
  3. 3Apply moisturizer immediately after bathing while your skin is still damp. This helps lock in moisture.
  4. 4Reapply whenever your skin feels dry. Vanicream tells you to apply Moisturizing Cream as needed, including after swimming or sun exposure and before exposure to wind and cold.

What can you use on sensitive skin?

A useful routine includes a mild cleanser, a moisturizer you tolerate and sun protection. Wash with warm water and remove makeup daily. Avoid products or exposures that reliably trigger symptoms rather than adding more products to counter each reaction. To find a pattern, note when symptoms appear and what touched your skin beforehand, including lotions, soap, makeup, detergent and clothing.2

Moisturizing Cream is not the same product as Vanicream's Facial Moisturizer SPF 30. For a moisturizer with sunscreen, choose broad spectrum protection and SPF 30 or higher. For time outdoors, also look for water resistance and reapply sunscreen every two hours. Moisturizer can minimize the appearance of fine lines, but it cannot deliver a facelift, despite the ambitious career plans of skincare packaging.5

What should you expect, and when should you stop?

Moisturizing Cream is intended to restore and maintain moisture and soothe dry, irritated skin. There is no fixed number of days for sensitive skin to settle: removing the trigger and allowing the skin to calm down are part of recovery. Do not keep using a product that triggers symptoms. New burning, itching, a rash or discoloration warrants reassessing what you applied, even if the product is marketed for sensitive skin.12

One specific consideration is propylene glycol, which is present in Moisturizing Cream and can cause sensory irritation in some people. Stinging can occur without a visible rash. If reactions repeatedly follow application, avoid the suspected trigger. A clinician can assess whether the problem is irritation or an allergy; allergy patch testing is different from trying a small amount at home.14

See a healthcare provider if symptoms are very bothersome or home care has not helped after about a week. Also seek help for new symptoms or when a previously useful routine stops working. Persistent sensitivity can require treatment of an underlying condition or review of a medication contributing to symptoms. For eczema, moisturizer belongs within a treatment plan that can also include prescribed medicine.23

Take your usual moisturizer when you travel

Pack the exact products you already tolerate rather than relying on unfamiliar hotel toiletries. Flights and climate changes can dry the skin, so keep a suitable face and body moisturizer available before, during and after flying. Vanicream's facial routine meets TSA carry on liquid limits, so the moisturizer can travel without acquiring its own suitcase.6
