Why this cream is worth considering

Vanicream describes the cream as easy to spread, quickly absorbed and noncomedogenic, meaning formulated not to clog pores. It contains no fragrance, masking fragrance, botanical extracts or essential oils. The formula includes petrolatum and sorbitol, but no ceramides. This is the Moisturizing Cream, not the Daily Facial Moisturizer, because the names are doing very little to separate themselves.1

For rosacea, choose fragrance free products rather than relying on an unscented label. A cream is generally preferred over a lotion or gel, and moisturizer still matters when your skin is oily. Vanicream also offers lighter facial options if the cream feels heavier than you want. The cream can be used on the face as well as the body, so the word facial does not need to be on the container for it to qualify.12

Test it before using it on your whole face

Apply a small amount to a patch near your jawline or neck and wait at least a few hours. If you react, avoid the cream and record its ingredients so you can look for patterns with other products. A sensitive skin label is a reason to consider a product; your skin's reaction decides whether to keep using it.4

How to use it with rosacea

  1. 1Cleanse gently morning and evening with a mild cleanser, not soap. Use your fingertips and warm water, rinse thoroughly, then pat gently with a clean towel.
  2. 2Let your face dry. Applying moisturizer to dry skin is less likely to cause burning or stinging than applying it while your face is still damp.
  3. 3If you use topical rosacea medication, apply it first and allow it to dry. Keep following your prescription directions.
  4. 4Gently apply Vanicream Moisturizing Cream without rubbing or massaging your skin. Vanicream directs you to apply it as needed, including before exposure to wind and cold.
  5. 5During the day, use a separate sunscreen offering broad spectrum protection, SPF 30 or higher and water resistance. If sunscreen irritates your skin, consider a fragrance free mineral option containing zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or both.

For ordinary dry skin, moisturizing immediately after bathing helps seal in moisture. For a rosacea prone face that stings, use the dry face approach above instead. Cold weather, low humidity and indoor heating can increase dryness, so reapply moisturizer as needed rather than treating one application as a daily limit.26

What can you expect?

Daily moisturizing can soothe irritation and support the skin's moisture barrier, the outer protection that helps retain water and keep irritants out. Rosacea can weaken that barrier and increase water loss. Dry weather can therefore make an already sensitive face harder to keep comfortable.5

Persistent facial color, visible blood vessels and rosacea breakouts can need treatment beyond moisturizer. A dermatologist can match treatment to those symptoms. Rosacea improvement is usually gradual and can take three months or longer, so do not use the cream's moisturizing effect as the measure of whether your medical treatment is working.37

When should you stop or get help?

Avoid the cream if it causes a reaction. Keep the rest of your routine simple, and avoid scrubbing and exfoliation. Ask a dermatologist for help if you cannot find products your skin tolerates. If you develop eye redness, burning or irritation, see a doctor right away; untreated eye involvement can affect eyesight.247
