Does Vanicream Moisturizing Cream contain petrolatum?

Yes. Petrolatum is the second ingredient listed, after water. Petrolatum, also called petroleum jelly, is an occlusive: it forms a protective layer that reduces water loss from the skin's surface. That makes it useful for dry skin. Vanicream does not give a petrolatum percentage, so the ingredient list cannot tell you its exact concentration.134

What does the formula do?

Glyceryl stearate is an emollient, an ingredient that softens and smooths skin by filling cracks in its outer layer. Moisturizers combine ingredients that soften skin, reduce moisture loss or attract water. The finished formula matters more than finding one fashionable ingredient on the list. Vanicream positions this cream for dry, sensitive skin and describes its texture as easy to spread, non greasy and quickly absorbed, which is a more useful job description than a promise to reinvent your face.123

Is it fragrance free?

The cream contains neither fragrance nor masking fragrance. It can still smell of the materials used to make it, because fragrance free is not a promise of olfactory invisibility. If you want ceramides, Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer is a different option. Vanicream Facial Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 is also a separate formula: it contains ceramides and 19.5% zinc oxide as its sunscreen ingredient. Those ingredients do not belong to the Moisturizing Cream formula.125

How should you apply it?

  1. 1After washing, pat your skin dry and apply while it is still slightly damp. Moisturizer helps trap existing moisture.
  2. 2Smooth the cream gently over the skin rather than rubbing vigorously. General emollient guidance advises following the direction of hair growth.
  3. 3Reapply as needed to your face, hands, feet or body. Vanicream also directs application after swimming or sun exposure, and before exposure to wind and cold.

For daytime use, apply sunscreen over moisturizer. Choose broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. If you use a steroid cream or another treatment for a skin condition, general emollient guidance advises leaving 20 to 30 minutes between products and asking your doctor which to apply first. That spacing avoids diluting the treatment or spreading it to skin that does not need it.46

What should you expect?

Moisturizers reduce dryness and support the skin's protective barrier. General moisturizer benefits are greatest during the first six hours after application, so regular reapplication can matter more than one large application. There is no specified timeline for this cream to relieve dryness. Vanicream labels the cream non comedogenic, meaning formulated not to clog pores; that does not rule out an individual reaction.13

Who should be careful?

Occlusive moisturizers can aggravate acne or inflamed hair follicles. Pure petroleum jelly is also discouraged on acne prone faces; that advice concerns petroleum jelly itself, not a tested outcome for this cream. Stop using a moisturizer if an allergic skin rash develops. Speak to a pharmacist, nurse or doctor about persistent burning, stinging, new rashes or inflamed follicles. Severe dry skin conditions need medical assessment rather than moisturizer alone.367

For a tub, use a clean spoon or spatula to reduce contamination. Keep emollient residue on clothing, bedding and dressings away from flames and cigarettes: contaminated fabrics can catch fire easily, and washing does not completely remove the residue.6
