This is the facial moisturizer with sunscreen, not the regular Vanicream Moisturizing Cream. Vanicream Facial Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 combines moisturizer and sunscreen, so its name is doing nearly as much work as a product description. Vanicream describes the formula as noncomedogenic, meaning formulated not to clog pores.1

Is SPF 30 enough?

SPF 30 meets the American Academy of Dermatology's minimum SPF recommendation. Broad spectrum protection matters too: SPF primarily describes protection against UVB, the rays responsible for sunburn, while broad spectrum sunscreen also protects against UVA. SPF is not a timer and does not tell you how many hours you can stay in the sun.23

For daily use, a broad spectrum SPF 30 mineral sunscreen is a reasonable choice. For days spent outdoors for long periods, choose SPF 50; for swimming or heavy sweating, choose a formula labeled water resistant. Used as directed alongside other sun protection, Vanicream's SPF 30 moisturizer helps reduce the risk of skin cancer and early skin aging caused by the sun.14

How to apply Vanicream SPF 30

Treat the SPF moisturizer as sunscreen when deciding how much to use and when to reapply. The following is general sunscreen guidance; follow the directions on your Vanicream package as well.5

  1. 1Apply before going outdoors. Allow approximately 15 minutes before sun exposure rather than putting sunscreen on once you are already outside.
  2. 2Use enough for coverage. For the face, the American Academy of Dermatology advises at least 1 teaspoon, approximately the amount covering the length of your index and middle fingers. Rub it thoroughly into the skin, avoiding the eyes and mouth.
  3. 3Cover the other exposed areas too. Remember your ears, neck and hairline, and use sunscreen on uncovered body skin. Most adults need about 1 ounce to cover skin not protected by clothing. Use an SPF 30 or higher lip balm for lips.
  4. 4Reapply every two hours while outdoors, and immediately after swimming or sweating. An application before leaving home does not replace later applications.
35

Use sunscreen every day, including cloudy days and winter days when you go outside. Protection depends on applying enough and keeping up with reapplication. Too little sunscreen, missed reapplications and expired products are common reasons people still get sunburned.5

Can you wear it swimming?

Check your Vanicream package for a water resistance claim before using it for swimming or sweaty exercise. A water resistant label specifies either 40 or 80 minutes of protection during swimming or sweating. SPF 30 and broad spectrum describe different things; neither tells you how well a sunscreen stays on wet skin. No sunscreen is waterproof, and all eventually wash off.23

Does it suit sensitive skin?

Vanicream formulates this sunscreen moisturizer for sensitive skin. Mineral sunscreens can be a useful option for people who find certain chemical sunscreen ingredients irritating, including people with rosacea or eczema. That is general guidance about mineral sunscreens, not a promise that this particular moisturizer will prevent irritation or breakouts.14

Vanicream describes the moisturizer as lightweight. Mineral sunscreens can leave a white or gray cast, although newer formulas have improved. Do not assume a specific finish under makeup or on your skin from the word mineral alone.14

What does the zinc oxide do?

Zinc oxide is the mineral sunscreen ingredient that provides protection against UVA and UVB. Mineral sunscreen works mainly by absorbing ultraviolet radiation and converting it into a small amount of heat. It also reflects and scatters some UV light, but it does not work solely as a reflective shield.4

How is it different from regular Vanicream?

Choose the SPF 30 facial moisturizer when you want facial moisturization with sun protection. Choose the regular Moisturizing Cream for moisture care on the face or body, including after bathing or showering. The shared Vanicream name does not make these products interchangeable, even if the bathroom shelf files them under the same surname.16

What about pregnancy, children and prescriptions?

Mineral sunscreens are commonly recommended during pregnancy because little zinc oxide or titanium dioxide is absorbed through the skin. Chemical sunscreens can also be appropriate. Daily sun protection matters during pregnancy because hormonal changes can increase susceptibility to melasma, patches of darker pigmentation that sun exposure can worsen.4

Ask a doctor before applying sunscreen to a child younger than six months. Keep infants out of direct sun and use protective clothing. For children older than six months, follow the sunscreen's Drug Facts directions; the regular Vanicream cream's suitability for all ages is not a substitute for sunscreen directions.3

If you take medication, ask your health care professional about specific sun precautions because some medicines increase sun sensitivity. If you think you have sun damaged skin, a dermatologist can examine it and advise on care.57

How to keep the sunscreen effective

Protect the container from excessive heat and direct sun. Outdoors, keep it in the shade or wrap it in a towel. Discard sunscreen past its expiration date. If there is no expiration date, discard it three years after purchase; if you cannot tell how old it is, replace it.3

No sunscreen completely blocks UV radiation. Pair sunscreen with shade, protective clothing, a broad brimmed hat and sunglasses, and limit sun exposure especially between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. People of every skin color need protection from sun damage.7
