What does each ingredient do?

Vitamin C is an antioxidant, meaning it helps counter harmful free radicals that damage skin. Topical vitamin C can reduce the appearance of dark spots and improve wrinkles and skin texture. It also supports protection against sun damage when used with sunscreen.1

Aloe gel can help skin retain moisture and has properties that reduce inflammation. Those benefits make moisture support a reasonable reason to consider aloe in a serum. Whether adding aloe makes vitamin C more effective or less irritating is unsettled, so choose the complete formula rather than treating aloe as the deciding ingredient.23

Aloe vera also goes by Aloe barbadensis. The clear inner leaf gel is different from aloe latex, which comes from the outer leaf layer. Drinking aloe and applying aloe gel are different uses with different safety concerns.45

What should you look for in a serum?

For vitamin C, a studied formulation is L ascorbic acid at 10% to 20%, with a pH below 3.5. Check the manufacturer's ingredient information for those details. Different vitamin C forms and formulations have different strengths and effects; the percentage alone does not tell the whole story.1

Prefer a fragrance free formula with fewer ingredients, especially if your skin is sensitive. Fragrance can contribute to dryness, irritation and allergic reactions. Introduce as few new products as possible so you can identify the culprit if irritation develops.6

Use one serum rather than stacking several, because a bathroom shelf is not a treatment plan.7

How do you apply it?

  1. 1Wash your face with a gentle cleanser.
  2. 2Apply a few drops of vitamin C serum to your face and neck.
  3. 3Apply moisturizer to help retain moisture.
  4. 4Finish with broad spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher.

Use vitamin C in the morning. Start every other day, then increase to daily use if tolerated. A noticeable improvement can take up to three months of consistent use.1

If you mean a separate aloe gel rather than aloe already in the serum, use the general layering rule: thinner products before thicker products, followed by moisturizer and morning sunscreen. The order between the gel and serum depends on their textures. There is no fixed waiting time for this pairing.7

Keep moisturizer in the routine even when you use a serum, because the serum category has not been promoted to the entire bathroom.7

What should you avoid combining?

Avoid mixing vitamin C with chemical exfoliants such as alpha hydroxy acids in the same application; the combination can affect skin pH. Adding more serums and treatments also increases the chance of dryness and other side effects. If you already use prescription skincare, ask your prescriber where the new serum belongs before changing your treatment routine.47

Who should be careful?

Test a small amount of a new product on a small area and watch for a reaction over 24 hours before broader use. With a known ingredient allergy, check the full list and speak with your doctor before using the serum. Vitamin C skincare is not recommended for children.16

Mild tingling can occur with vitamin C. Stop using the serum and contact a clinician for substantial discomfort or irritation. Aloe gel is generally well tolerated, but burning, itching, rash and eczema have been reported. If a reaction persists after stopping suspected products, see a dermatologist.156

During pregnancy or breastfeeding, ask your healthcare provider about the specific aloe product you plan to use. Aloe taken by mouth can be unsafe during these periods; do not treat an aloe drink as interchangeable with a topical serum.5
