Why does weight loss leave loose arm skin?
After a large weight loss, skin can lack the elasticity needed to return to its previous shape. How much skin hangs under the arms depends partly on how much weight you lose, your age and how firm your skin is. Younger people generally have better skin tone, but age alone does not determine the amount of loose skin.23
Loose skin is also reported by people taking GLP 1 weight loss medicines, including semaglutide and tirzepatide. Substantial weight loss remains relevant whether it follows medication, bariatric surgery or changes in eating habits. If folds rub together, they can develop rashes. Discuss skin side effects with your prescribing team or a dermatologist, especially when basic skin care does not help.45
What causes sagging skin?
The same broad changes affect skin beyond the arms. With age, skin becomes thinner and less plump as it loses fat, and healing can take longer. Sunlight is a major cause of skin aging, while smoking contributes to wrinkles. Gradual loosening with age or after weight loss is different from unusual sagging that appears suddenly.16
Are stretch marks the same as sagging?
Stretch marks are scars that form when skin stretches or shrinks quickly, rather than hanging folds of excess skin. They can appear on the upper arms after weight changes or rapid muscle growth. Rapid stretching or shrinking can break collagen, which provides structure and support, and elastin, which lets skin stretch. Treating stretch marks is a separate question from removing loose skin.7
What can skin care actually do?
Dryness, sun protection and excess hanging skin need different approaches.1
Apply body moisturizer while skin is still damp after bathing, or whenever it feels dry. Protect exposed arms with shade, protective clothing and a broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Keep areas where skin touches skin clean and dry to reduce irritation. These measures support skin health and comfort; substantial excess skin after weight loss needs a separate assessment.4
A moisturizer can help dry skin feel better, but removing excess skin is a surgical job, not an extra duty for body lotion. If hanging skin is the main concern, a plastic surgeon can assess whether removal is appropriate.23
Before surgery after major weight loss, weight should generally have been stable for at least a year. Surgery can improve body shape but does not stop future skin aging. Risks include scarring, infection, blood clots and poor wound healing. Swelling and wounds take about three months to settle and heal, while final results and scar fading can take up to two years.2
NHS funding is not routine for excess skin surgery. Local rules differ: Coventry and Rugby's policy does not fund body contouring for the arms, thighs or buttocks. Ask your GP about the rules where you live before planning treatment.35
When should you get sagging arm skin checked?
Arrange an assessment if loose skin appears suddenly, seems unusual, causes sores or repeated rashes, or interferes with dressing or activities. Rarely, a connective tissue condition called cutis laxa causes skin fibers to stay stretched instead of springing back. It can be inherited or develop later after illness, inflammation or a reaction to medication. A clinician can assess the cause rather than assuming every change is ordinary aging.26
