What else is happening with the flakes?

Look at the accompanying symptoms and what changed before the flaking started. Flakes describe what the surface is doing, not why, which makes them a symptom rather than a diagnosis with excellent branding.1

  • Dryness after cold weather, indoor heating or hot showers can reflect moisture loss. Harsh soaps, scrubbing and excessive exfoliation can also damage the skin barrier.
  • A red rash after contact with skincare, fragrance or hair dye can be contact dermatitis, meaning irritation or an allergic reaction. A product you have used for years can still cause a reaction.
  • A facial rash that looks oily but also scaly can be seborrheic dermatitis. Flaky, itchy facial patches alongside dandruff are a reason to see a doctor.
  • Very dry, scaly and intensely itchy patches can occur with eczema. Raised, scaly patches can occur with psoriasis. Both need care suited to the condition rather than dryness alone.

What should you do for dry, flaky facial skin?

  1. 1Wash with warm, not hot, water and a mild, fragrance free, soap free cleanser. Massage the cleanser on, then rinse without prolonged rubbing.
  2. 2Pat gently, leaving your skin slightly damp, then apply moisturizer to help trap water. For dry skin, moisturize 2 to 3 times a day or as needed.
  3. 3Avoid scrubbing the flakes away. Look for a moisturizer containing barrier fats such as ceramides; an ointment is richer than a cream, and a cream is richer than a lotion.
  4. 4Use sunscreen every day, including in winter. Keep showers short, about 5 to 10 minutes, and use a humidifier if indoor air is dry.

Longer cleansing is not more effective, even if a stopwatch makes it feel like a proper project. If a particular product is causing a contact reaction, stop exposing your skin to it; a dermatologist can help identify the trigger when it is unclear.24

Could an acne treatment be causing the flaking?

Benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, adapalene, tazarotene, tretinoin and isotretinoin can dry and irritate skin. Daily moisturizer can help you tolerate these treatments, even if your skin also feels oily. For acne prone skin, look for a moisturizer labelled oil free or noncomedogenic, meaning unlikely to clog pores.6

If you use prescription tretinoin, follow your prescribed directions rather than increasing the amount. Tell your doctor about severe or persistent peeling, burning, redness or swelling, and call immediately for hives, rash or pain at the treated area. Do not apply tretinoin to sunburned or eczema affected skin. If you become pregnant while using tretinoin, call your doctor.7

How long does flaky skin take to improve?

The cause matters: winter related dryness can persist until skin is properly cared for or humidity rises, while seborrheic dermatitis usually needs treatment to clear. Repairing a damaged skin barrier can take three to four months before benefits become visible. That is not a reason to wait months with a persistent rash.234

When should you see a doctor?

Arrange an appointment if flaking continues despite gentle care and moisturizing, or facial redness lasts more than two weeks. Seek medical advice sooner for weeping, crusting, swelling, fever or itching that wakes you at night. Treatment depends on the cause: an inflammatory condition or fungal infection can require medicine rather than moisturizer alone.134

What does flaky skin mean?

The medical term is scaling: visible peeling of the outer skin layers, whether on the face or elsewhere. Scaling describes an appearance, not a particular disease, so the flakes have not done the diagnostic paperwork.1
