What does micellar water actually do?
Micellar water contains purified water, moisturizers and micelles, tiny clusters of cleansing molecules that attract and lift away oil, dirt and makeup. Its mild cleansing agents remove grime without stripping away much of your skin's natural oil. The liquid is lightweight and feels much like plain water.1
Micellar water and toner have different jobs, even if their bottles could pass for coworkers. Micellar water cleans; toners usually hydrate or deliver ingredients for particular concerns. If you use a toner, apply it after cleansing, on clean, dry skin.1
How do you use micellar water?
- 1Check your bottle's directions. Apply a small amount with your hands or a cotton pad, then gently massage it over your face without scrubbing.
- 2Follow with a gentle cleanser if you are removing sunscreen or cosmetics. For a cleanser that needs rinsing, use lukewarm water and pat dry with a soft towel.
- 3Apply your usual treatments after cleansing, then moisturizer. Finish with sunscreen in the morning.
For eye makeup, follow the particular product's directions rather than assuming every formula is suitable. For example, CeraVe Hydrating Micellar Water is suitable for the eye area and contact lens wearers. CeraVe tells you to shake the bottle, saturate a cotton pad, hold it over a closed eye for a few seconds, then gently wipe.3
Do you need to rinse or use face wash?
Many micellar waters can replace face wash, depending on your skin type and what you need to remove. Many are also designed to stay on the skin; CeraVe Hydrating Micellar Water needs no rinsing. The no rinse format saves a trip to the sink, not a place in the routine for moisturizer. Heavy makeup can still need a dedicated makeup remover.3
Who is it useful for?
Micellar water is especially useful for dry or sensitive skin because it cleans gently. Choose a formula intended for sensitive skin if that is your concern. CeraVe Hydrating Micellar Water, for example, is fragrance free and contains ceramides and niacinamide. Even a hydrating micellar water should be followed by moisturizer.13
Keep routine face washing to morning and night, plus after heavy sweating. More scrubbing is not better cleaning: scrubbing irritates skin. Use a gentle cleanser without alcohol and a light touch around your eyes.2
Micellar water does not treat acne or erase wrinkles. If you have acne, choose cleansing products labelled noncomedogenic, meaning they are formulated not to clog pores. Remove makeup before bed, then wash with a gentle cleanser. If breakouts persist and you cannot identify which cosmetic or skincare product is contributing, a dermatologist can help.14
