What does the percentage actually tell you?

Keep the distinction between arbutin and alpha arbutin clear: general advice about arbutin cannot tell you which alpha arbutin concentration works best. A percentage is useful label information, but it is not a miniature certificate of effectiveness.2

Arbutin belongs to a group of ingredients that inhibit tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in making melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. These ingredients can lighten areas of excess pigmentation. Topical treatments generally work better on pigment in the outer skin layer than on deeper discoloration.13

What should you do alongside a dark spot product?

These are general steps for treating dark spots, not alpha arbutin dosing instructions.

  1. 1Address the cause first. If marks follow acne or eczema, treating the underlying condition helps prevent new marks.
  2. 2Protect exposed skin every day. Use broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher; SPF 50 or higher is advised for exposed areas with pigmentation after inflammation.
  3. 3For darker skin tones, choose a tinted sunscreen containing iron oxide to protect against visible light as well as ultraviolet light. Apply sunscreen before going outside and reapply every two hours outdoors, and after swimming or sweating.
  4. 4Stop a skincare product if it burns or stings. Irritation can cause additional dark spots, so increasing treatment intensity is not the answer to irritated skin.

How long should fading take?

Think in months rather than days for dark spot treatment generally. Once the trigger has stopped, a spot a few shades darker than your usual skin color commonly fades within 6 to 12 months. Deeper pigment can take years. Treatment can speed fading, but those natural fading times are not an alpha arbutin results timetable.34

What if choosing a strength is not enough?

Do not use the concentration alone to choose your treatment. The largest number on a bottle does not deserve the deciding vote just for being easy to read. Significant improvement in pigmentation after inflammation often requires a combination of treatments rather than one ingredient.2

If your treatment is not delivering the results you want, a dermatologist can assess the pigmentation and combine treatments safely. Seek medical care if a dark area is also red, hot, itchy, painful, or leaking blood or pus. Those symptoms need assessment rather than a stronger brightening serum.34
